Decided to get a FPS to complement my collection.

Any suggestions?

The last one I played to death was Half-Life so the logical choice would be HL2, however Doom 3 or Far-Cry are also a possibility. Anything more recent worth looking at?

HL 2 or Battlefield 2 if you're into more online based shennanigans

Forget Call of Duty 2 because it's poo. Far Cry you can now pick up for a tenner, which isn't bad. Quake 4 and Doom 3 I found pretty tedious to be honest, but thats just my opinion.

Oh, and FEAR's rather repetitive, but not too shabby. Needs a pretty quick PC though.

Got BF2.

I fancied a game thats one-player and offers a progression through the game as apposed to pick-up-and-play style of the ones I play at the moment (BF2, GTLegends, GTR...)

Half Life 2 is very good and so is Far Cry.

I got bored of Doom3 and never finished it, and started playing Quake 4 and enjoyed it but then got into GT Legends and haven't touched it since

So I would say either HL2 or Far Cry, but I haven't played FEAR which is supposed to be good.

Picked up FarCry a week or so back as it was only a tenner.

Jolly good game!

Much more fun than either Doom3 or Quake4.

Call Of Duty 2 rules as a single player game !!

Wipes the floor with Doom3 and Quake4.

IMO

Far cry is by far the best story based FPS game I've ever played. It's brilliant, but play it on one of the harder settings for maximum enjoyment.

BLASPHEMER! "Deus ex" is the best single player FPS. Ever.

FarCry was a cracking game, i loved the way the music would react to the environment too..

It's a close one, i'd go for FarCry because you get more miles out of it (longer single player game). The combat is better in FarCry too.

To be honest, with software as cheap as it is, I would get both HL2 and Far Cry. HL2 works better on slower machines, but Far Cry has update patches to enable High Dynamic Range lighting. Far Cry does have annoyances though, like the enemy being able to see you despite you being totally covered by vegetation.

They really should release Warren Spector's back-catalogue. Ultima Underworld (1 and 2), Thief (1, 2, and 3), System Shock (1 and 2) and Deus Ex. They all show up the current crop of shooters as brainless linear shooters. The only current game which comes anywhere close is Oblivion (when it isn't busy crashing).

Yep, both HL2 and Far Cry tick all the right FPS boxes, although the latter does get annoying, as has been stated, you can't hide without being seen, every time - and there are too many 'baddies' near the end, spoiling the game, IMHO.
Another top notch stealth/FPS is Project IGI2, I loved that game, it has everything in it, cool sniping, well thought out mission objectives, and, on the whole, pretty cool!

£2.49 on Amazon Bargin!

Decided on HL2, based purely on the fact that HL1 was one of the best games I've played

Far Cry should be cheap to pick up once I've finished HL2

scared but happy

Good choice! Doom3 I found a bit dull. Great graphics. Great sound. High suspense. Same creature over and over again at points that did not make sense.

Half Life. Episode 1 looks good. http://ep1.half-life2.com/
