Saw a female police officer driving her squad car today...

No sirens or lights, not moving fast just 'normal'. She came round a roundabout full u turn - no indication - and nearly took us with her....She was also holding her radio and talking into it, like it was a mobile phone...?

Allowed, not allowed...what's the story?

Two way radios do not come under mobile phone rules.

Doesn't excuse signalling etc though.

Though precisely the same vehicular control and driver concentration level safety risk considerations apply. Makes sense

Actually no, I believe there is a greater effect on concentration from phone use than radio communication.

I believe it's intentional, not a loophole.

My Nokia mobile has a PTT function "Push To Talk" which is designed to work as a two way radio when used in this mode.

Can I use it in this mode whilst driving then? If not, why not?

No if the handset has phone capability then it's use is an offence.

[blimey 1000 posts per month is one hell of an average VH!!]

So why do you think it is intentional, what is it intended for??

Because radios don't produce the same adverse effects as phones.

I believe it has something to do with the Wireless Communications Atc 1972 or something. Basically it legalises the use of CB's, 2 ways and other communication equipment whilst driving. I also believe it was recently updated to specify that the equipment must have a PTT and any channel change gubbins should be on the mic rather than having to push buttons on the unit.

I could be wrong of course.

As I said...everyone.
Anyone can use two way radio & nobody can use phones, because it is phones that are shown to produce the adverse loss of concentration.
