Tried using the search function but it didn't seem to be working this morning. Apologies if this is a question that's already been asked many times:

After cleaning the air filter, what oil should be used on it? My local autoparts dealer has a K&N air filter cleaning and oiling kit for £16 - would this be suitable?

Or can I just use white spirit and engine oil, or gear oil, instead?

Yes that would be fine.I've heard of people using light(3 in 1 type)oil,2 stroke oil etc.Personally i just use a little clean engine oil and it works fine.I dont think it can be too critical, especially if your throwing it away next time.

I've used a Pipercross foam filter cleaning and oiling kit from Halfords (about £12). The oil is very fine and comes in an aerosol. I'd have thought engine oil's way too viscous to soak into the foam without blocking it?

I must admit i thought that too at first, doesn't seem to do any harm though.I clean my filter after 6 months(2-3k)and replace every year,so perhaps it doesn't get chance to get too blocked then?always looks completely crapped up though
