Maserati launches two new GTs

Faster gearchanges, better-looking, more luxury

Maserati has officially announced the availability of two variants on the Quattroporte, the Sport GT and the Executive GT, as reported by PH last August. Both variants remain propelled from 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds by a V8 unchanged from the standard version: it puts out 400bhp from its 4.2 litres.

They go on sale on 22 April, priced at £80,595 for the Sport GT and £83,195 for the Executive GT. These compare to £74,595 for the base model.

Sport GT

The Sport GT's name says it all. It's about "enhancing the car's high performance spirit and sporty character". The gearbox's electronics have been overhauled so the Sport button cuts gear changing times by 35 per cent -- which fixes one of the beefs that many test drivers reported. Also, at high engine speeds, the exhaust system also gives the V8 "a much deeper rumble".

The 20-inch wheels and Skyhook adaptive damping software deliver improvements in handling close to the limit while the wheels, which include a tyre pressure monitoring system, are combined with brakes featuring metal weave tubing, cross-drilled discs and titanium-coloured callipers.

Exterior tweaks include a black chrome grille and side air intakes, for instance, while the bonnet bears the pierced Trident redolent of the Maserati competition cars of the past. Inside it gets a carbon fibre trimmed steering wheel, sporty hand-brake grip and lightweight aluminium pedals.

Executive GT

The Executive GT on the other hand is more about luxury. It gets a chrome front, side grilles and 19-inch wheels. Inside, the changes are about added comfort and an exclusive finish.

This version includes the Comfort Pack (combined heating, ventilation and massage for rear passengers as well as electric adjustment of both seats and backrests), retractable wood rear tables matched to the rest of the interior, and curtains for extra privacy. The cabin also boasts Alcantara roof lining, a leather-trimmed steering wheel with wood inserts and a climate control panel for the rear seat passengers.

A rumble at higher speeds? Surely the rumble is desirable at idle and low engine speeds, with a wail being the noise of choice at the upper end? They don't have a clue, do they?

Well, in a MINI I guess you're just happy to hear a ruble at any speed.

Couldn't agree more. One of coolest and most characterful cars on sale today.

This car is infinitely cooler and more desirable than the default plebs choice BMW M5.

I’ll start saving now....in a couple of years they’ll probably be quite cheap second hand.

Check ebay out, there is a 2003 one on there for £50k at the moment and they are on dealers forecourts for nearer £70k, though it has been on before and could be some sort of scam, it could also be a completely genuine need to sell quickly.. I keep wondering if I should buy it and punt it on in six months time for another £10k and if it was up this end of the country I probably would. Alot of top quality motor for the money if its genuine..

Don't you think the long term residual prospects of these Quattroportes is likely to be pretty dismal? Look at the coupes - great car though they are.

£50k might seem a good price today, but what will it be worth in a couple of years time?

I did walk past one parked in Bond Steet in London yesterday (illegally, natch) and I must admit that it looked stunning - so cool and elegant. Despite this, its likely that the trade and second-hand buyers will look at it with suspicion come time to sell.

Granted, long term they will lose money, as will any top end A8, S Class, 7 Series or 612 etc. I still think however, if you bought that one I mentioned, today, for £50k you would (at the very least) get your money back in 12 months time.

Edited to say.. You have got a £20k head start before depreciation hits. 2 years time and yes, you could struggle to make your money back. For even longer term prospects just look at autotrader and see what any big car is making nowadays.. look at the old M5, excellent machines and cheaper than shopping trolleys at under £15k

But have you really got a £20k headstart? What would happen if you took that Masser into a Porsche dealer today and asked for a trade-in against a 997, or a BMW dealer against an M5? I think their offer would be rather a lot nearer £50k then £70k. I know this from bitter experience with a number of supposedly valuable cars. The car may be worth more than £50k in cold blood (but not of my money), but they will be terrified and just won't want it, and will give you a 'kick in the balls' bid.

Aye ok, taking it to a dealer as a trade in would knock the price, but to pass it on again privately in 6 months would make profit. Of course, no warranty etc would affect the price, but someone looking for one would get themselves a bargain, and yourself would have had a nice ride for a few months and made a few grand pocket money.

Anyway, its worth checking out the ebay motor if you are looking at the very least!

Extremely nice, I do subscribe to the 'effortless style' view on these cars, like the V8 Vantage, brute performance far from the only grail, a product where it adds up to an irresistable, overall package.

I'd much prefer an EVO IX FQ340 but then I was partially state educationalised.

A bit harsh though. I fall into the same category, partially state educated (Australia though) and I really want a riced up 306 with the numberplate ChavRocket (CHVRCKT)?

As for the masser, weren't they going to put the ZF 6 Speed in it to give it broader appeal?

Ali.
