I posted on here a while ago seeking opinions on TD5 Discovery's to replace my Freelander as the family/dog mobile.

My budget is about £17k and I was fancying a facelifted Disco TD5 ES Auto.

However, having looked around, I see that I can have a nice '02 Range Rover TD5 for about the same money. I do like the Disco but the style and image and look of the RR does appeal (as do the better residuals that I believe it would have)

My requirement is to use the car for the next 5 years or so to haul 2 young kids and a Labrador around the New Forest for muddy exploits and for family holidays kitted out with bikes/surf boards etc. My wife would use the car all week and I'd take over at the weekends.

Mileage will be lowish (7k per annum) and servicing will be done by a local independent.

Would a Disco or a Rangie be best suited to our needs? I've no idea what a Range Rover is like to drive (I've driven a Disco) or whether it'd be significantly more expensive to run.

couple of questions about the Range Rover -

do they have as much space inside as the Disco?

are they as hard wearing?

is the diesel engine the same in both cars and does it have enough oomph for the Range Rover?

The P38 Range Rover (1994-2002) has a BMW 2.5 6 cylinder turbo diesel engine, whereas the Discovery 2 (1998-2003) has Land Rover's own 5 cylinder (Td5) unit.

Range Rover is wider inside but obviously not as tall as the Discovery so space wise they are similar but in different ways if you see what I mean!

Regading how they stand upto use both are about the same robusteness inside/out. Neither have great fit/finnish inside so plastics are easily broken and leather wears quickly unless you keep on top of it with cleaner etc.

interesting regarding the engines and begs the question about which is the better unit?
