Brake Pad Change

Hi Chaps,
I''m thinking of replacing the pads on my C4996.
Will I need any special tools?

A jack, suitable size spanners, a punch for removing retaining pin and spring, adjustable pliers for spreading the pads, needle nose pliers for any retaining pins and if possible an old pad with little or no wearing material left to help push pistons firmly back into place when old pads have been removed. Some copperslip for back of pads and a rubber hammer and a large screwdriver to help ease anything that wants to stick.

That should do the trick. BTW snip the wear sensors snd bind the two wire ends together and then cable tie out of the way. The sensors are a PITA and you are far better off checking wear by examination than by using the sensor(IMHO).

When you say snip the wear sensor wire, that worries me a bit? can I DIY and keep sensors in place?

If you are getting OE pads you may as well stick the wear sensors in place. If not don't bother to snip the wires, just tie-wrap the whole item out of the way.

The only issue that I have with the wear sensors is that (a) they break easily when you try to remove them and have often been partially destroyed before you change the pads and (b) many non OEM pads. e.g. Pagid, do not have the necessary grooves and so fitting sensors is not possible. Tying them out of the way is OK provided your brake wear light has not come on. If it has, then snipping them and tying the 2 wires together is the only alternative to buying new sensors.
