Boxster or Boxster S
Discussion
I have just recently put my £1000 deposit down to secure a place on the order list for a new Boxster 2.7. Now that its ordered I am wondering if I might of been better going for the Boxster S. The difference between the two cars is about £4000 when I've spec'd them up. Is there a huge difference between the cars in terms of performance etc. Also is the Boxster S worth £4000 more in real terms than the 2.7 ? Going to arange a test drive in an S in the next few weeks, but would be interested in peoples though between the cars.
A mate of mine just bought one, and possibly summed up the differences very well. "The S stands for his really doesn't it"
.
I'd go for the S - the cost difference isn't that great (~10%), and if you didn't you would always eye the 'S's that you drove past with envy. (All IMHO obviously)

Daydeamer has put it perfectly.

I used a similar logic on deciding on the power upgrade issue on my turbo.

Dogz, I don't know what you're driving now nor do you say whether you've gone for a manual or tiptronic, but I have an S which I will hopefully be picking up some time this week. I was taken by Porsche GB on a Boxster driving day 18 months ago when I had the chance to drive all 4 variants (admittedly not the 03 models).
At the time I had a 330ci Auto and frankly the 2.7 tip felt slower than that. It wasn't until I got into the manual 3.2 that I actually started to understand what the fuss was about.
In the end I decided that I wanted a 996 and bought a 2000 cabrio.
BUT - now I have decided that for me the Boxster is closer to what I want than the 996 and so this week sees the arrival of my first brand new Porsche.
The point of my life story here is:
For my part I would rather sacrifice a few options and have an "S" than an over spec'd 2.7 - I think there is a big difference, however if your budget doesn't get you to the £38k starting point for an "S" then the 2.7 is a fantastic car in its own right - to me it just felt as if it could handle significantly more power (mind you so can the S).

Get the S. You know you need it. Same handling but more grunt and more brakes. Personally I'd dump the leather/hardtop etc and other *nonsense* options to have the higher performance car if it was a budget issue.
If the 4K additional spend isn't that much of a problem to you then DO IT!

Had the same debate when I ordered my Boxster. In the end I went with the 2.7 with lots of toys (I'm a gadget freak). Figured I would move on to an S next.
Happy with my decision so far, my Boxster arrived last month and so far I've had lots on fun in my 2.7. By the time I'm bored of it, it'll be time to move to an S
