when did the 911 Turbo come out?
Discussion
Difficult and hard work, but somehow fun. I have a 996 TT, which is a world away from the early ones. The earliest I have driven is a 3.3 911 Turbo with a 4 speed box (1985 ish I think). Very heavy feel in comparisson to modern cars, but strangly compelling to drive.
You will still need 20k ish to get a good one, which is nearly enough to get a decent 993. 993 C2 is nearly as powerful and much better looking, imo. My advice, for what its worth, try some out first.

thanks for the input, to be honest with you(without wanting to rock the boat etc) im more of a TVR person in the modern era, i just like them but im a real fan of the 70s and 80s 911s and would like an early turbo one day as i do see it as a great classic car,not looking for one imminently but within the next few years i definatly want to have owned one.
I am sure someone will be along to correct me, but I *think* the turbo was launched in 1976? (is that right?), so the early ones do go back a bit. They are great cars, although I understand that they can be a bit laggy, and were lacking the brakes dept. That said, many will have had brakes upgraded, and the lag is probably part of the experience. If you want a classic fun performance car, you cant go far wrong. Buy a good one, look after it and you shouldnt lose much cash on it, and it will give you plenty of enjoyment. I still have my 3.2 911 (1987) despite it being outclassed in handling, braking and raw power by many hot hatches these days, and certainly I could add a little cash and something like a 996 would nearly be in reach. However, like you, the modern cars (whilst better cars) dont quite do it for me at the moment. No doubt I will change my ways at some point. I've also thought about moving to an 80s Turbo. The thought of driving the orginal supercar has alot of appeal. Good luck to you.
I think it was '74/75 for the original 3.0. Pretty rare now and not very quick by modern standards (260 bhp ?). Increased to 3.3 plus an intercooler for 300 bhp from '77. Then surprisingly few changes all the way to '89 other than introduction of the 5 speed box from '88. Quite a heavy car to drive, and fairly laggy in standard form, but a lot of fun, and still generate tremendous admiration and respect when out and about. Not to everyones taste but a classic Porsche.
1975 saw the first 3 litre turbo`s in the UK . I owned the one pictured which was bought new by a rock band member named Jon Lord (Deep Purple or Black Sabbath) can`t recall which.
Under braked, (because the 917 discs Porsche wanted to fit developed cracks during testing) they made do with the Carrera setup which were not up to the job and suffered from fade , also fitted was a 4 speed gearbox which wasn`t a problem at the time. Power and torque 260/260. The power the turbo delivered was either "on or off" and driving quickly was a technique strictly adhered to and remembered. Suspension was torsion bars/ dampers front and rear , lowering the front was a ten minute job with an open ended spanner, ( never worrying about geo !) lowering the rear was best left to a specialist. I tracked mine a few times in the early eighties at Goodwood .
It was enormous fun and I believe taught me a lot about the marque.
My present turbo ( 996) is just as much fun but a doddle to drive in comparison.
3 0 liter at Franfurt show in what looked like 3 0 rs body [silver] dont think production till '75. Turbo lag , how long u got ? Brakes however were fine so long as u kept them well up to scratch, 3.3 were off 917 and also needed care............only very last 3 0 had tubo boost gauge making life a bit of an adventure , all finished with great leather trim, some interesting paint colours and very top of the range feel ..........center cnsole even had a withdrawable microphone for dictation! Mine expired at 213 000 miles rod thru the side !!! It did have a very unsophisticated adjustable waste gate valve may not have helped .........of course no intercooler on pre 3.3 !!!!
Heaven knows how u got one round Goodwood Mikail i gave up !!

as the thread sugests really, i know im not really a modern Porsche fan but the ones from the 70s and 80s i really like, would love one of the early 911 turbos when funds permit, does anyone here own one? or can say what thier like as a car?[/quote]
I recently bought the '89 930 Turbo 5 speed in my profile. Like you I have always been a big fan of the 80's look 911's.
Whilst the car may not provide the driving dynamics of a modern 911, it is still pretty rapid and when the booooost comes in it still makes me smile every time, which is just what I want from my car!
Mine has a 1 Bar boost spring which helps reduce the lag. To be honest I don't really find the lag an issue. As long as you're showing 3,000 rpm+ you really don't have to wait long for the scenery to blur...
What has really surprised me is the amount of positive attention that the car gets. There is definitely something about the 930 that presses the right buttons with people..
I would never consider swapping it for a NA 993, and certainly not the rather anonymous silver Cayman I overtook last week (no, he wasn't trying very hard) which probably cost twice what I paid.
Obviously, it's each to their own but if you already like the 930, find a good one and you won't be disappointed..

Get yourself a late 80's 930 and then change the headers, turbo, intercooler, port the heads among other bits and bobs and you'll have yourself a near 500bhp monster that has no lag AT ALL, boost comes in as low as 1600rpm! And then go out and make mincemeat of just about anyone! I love the heavy feel and the retro styling in mine, OK it's a handful but when you get a straight run changing into 4th at over 130mph is just awesome, great car!!
thanks for the input from everyone much appreciated, i really like the 930s you mentioned, i know thier not the newest sharpest things out there but they just have a certain appeal to me, got to be in either red or white though, also residuals seem to be pretty solid and i gather thier quite reliable too, when i have the money i will either be thinking of one of these or a early Tuscan, i have to be honest and say i think the Tuscan is a better looking car and no doubt will be faster etc but i just really think the early turbos are cool and will end up getting one sometime, im sure the 996 and 997 are both brilliant cars in terms of engineering and drivability and i can see why they appeal but they just dont appeal like the early ones do.
