996 - Lowered Suspension

I am looking to buy a 996 having recently sold my Elise due to a new arrival in the family and a need for some space in the back etc.

I am looking at a 996 C2 which has the factory 10mm lowered suspension option and my gut feel is this should help it feel a bit more alive (and hence like an Elise). I have read that this is a useful option but that the downside is it's less comfortable.

I guess there is no substitute for a test drive but would be interested in opinions. Is this a popular option or is it is likely to be a bit too much? I assume that at least the interior won't rattle over bumps (unlike my Lotus).

Also, assuming I buy a car which has recently been serviced and doesn't need new tyres/brakes etc., is a £1,000 a reasonable "just in case" fund for the first year? I plan to buy a Porsche warranty in any event.

My 996 has lowered suspension, and yes it does make it slightly less comfortable (according to my passengers), I haven't had any other issues, speed bumps are no problem etc. If the car you are looking at has got it then fine, if not I don't think you need to worry, the 911 is in a different league to the Lotus and the performance and handling wil be just fine.

If you find another car with the right spec bar the lowered suspension, then you can easily add the 10mm lowered suspension at your local OPC for ~1K.

as a previous S1 Elise owner who's just got a (standard height) 996 I don't think you'll be disappointed either way. I saw a lowered car and (from the passenger seat) it was noticably less pliant than the standard car but crucially was never crashy like an Elise. I went standard height because my car will see more speed bumps than track miles and the standard car is not exactly bouncy.

I'm not sure if you'll ever recreate the immediacy and rawness of an Elise though I've never been in anything other than a standard tune 996 so I'm sure someone will be along to correct me in a couple of minutes!

To make sure it is a factory fit, you need to look at the label under the front bonnet. This will have a sticker on it with all the options - you need to find the number M030 - which is the factory sports suspension package.

IMO if you are used to Lotus handling, then getting a 996 without this option I think you will be disappointed with the handling and ride height whilst still maintaining a decent level of comfort.

Best way of course, try one with and one without and decide for yourself ..!
