911 speedsters
Discussion
A very fair observation Craig, some of the cars available are near concours,,hard to justify price when you couldn't spend £20k on an equivalent 3.2 or 64 cab....but then again they do have much more character.
Have seen an occasional high mileage one appear sub £30k...... if you are not a member of PCGB contact chris Davenport 911speedster AT porscheclubgb.com He can probaly fill you in on the details better than most of us.

As a work of artistic design they are quite interesting - but not a particularly good 911.
Best 3.2 Carrera is the little 'Club Sport', and even well used examples seem to command good money.
geneve I am a huge fan of the CS, but there is definitely a sense of occasion with a speedster and on a sunny day it has to be one of the most fun Porsches anyone can own ?

I see about 6 of these advertised at any one time, all between about 32 & 38k but they seem to stand for ever not sold?
Speedsters are funny cars when it comes to selling and seem very hard to shift via dealers. Paul Stephens has a couple for sale now at 38k which is probably a little high.
The other car that has been around a while is a former national concours champion, it is easily the best in the country if not the world, but opinion seems to be that it is too nice and prospective owners claim they would be afraid to drive it, so they buy a car that is still in A1 condition and save a few thousand quid. The concours boys are put off as well because the car has already won the big prize.
Most cars tend to exchange hands without ever hitting the classifieds, in fact I would estimate that I have been involved in 75% of Speedsters sales over the last 5 years (And I didn't charge a penny

Prices have ranged from 19k for an absolute dog to 45k for delivery mileage only examples.
Don't be put of buying a Speedster because of stories of leaky roofs, the trick is in having it adjusted right. As an example a few weekends ago I got caught in a horrendous storm which included , rain, sleet and snow, not a drop of water found its way into the cabin.
Chris
I guess part of the problem is, as stated above, they are expensive as in brilliant condition, so by using it you devalue it.
The one at Gmund cars at the moment (don't remember seeing it their this morning) is immaculate, never seen a car that clean before. Wiping you finger along the underside appears to transfer more muck to the car than to your finger.
The documentation is amazing, there are some photo copies of the the Sunday Times classified adds from the late eighties when the car was advertised for £140K (or there abouts), I believe it sold for that amount too. The adverts make amazing reading!
With a car in this state you are mainly paying for the near perfect condition etc.
I love a black one with turbo body, phoar !!!!

Craig, have you seen May 2006 - 911 & PW?
There's a blue (white interior) 911 3.2 Carrera Super Sport Cab in there featured and advertised at £18995 I think. I'm at work at the mo. so can't check.
Wasn't this the sort of car you were looking for?

The one you saw at Gmund is the concours car I'm referring too, I think the owner placed it with them on sale or return, I noticed myself that it has disappeared from the website so it may have sold.
Not sure I agree about them devaluing with use, I bought mine with 7000 on the clock, it's now at 16something and I would expect to get back what I paid, perhaps even a little more.
You can't ask for more than that from any car.

I would imagine that any potential devaluing due to driving would be dependant on the mileage put on.
With yours at 16K is still very low for a near 16 - 20 year old car. I guess if you only did a couple of K a year it probably wouldn't make a lot of difference.
Do you keep yours in pristine concours condition? I would imagine that any potential Speedster purchase would also be dependant on whether or not you are prepared to put the effort in to keep it clean.
Is nice to know that you drive yours, nothing worse than a garage queen.

What are they like to drive compared to a similar 'regular' cabriolet of the same vintage?
Just the same really, perhaps a little noisier as the roof is not lined as in regular 3.2 cabs but how can that be a bad thing!! With the roof up it's a nice place to be as you feel very hunkered down, despite this there is plenty of headroom as the seats are set a little lower (I'm 6ft).
The performance is fantastic, I take it to LeMan most years and last year it was easily keeping up some 964RS's that were in our party, and they weren't hanging around, just ask RS owner Lee Fulford who I know posts on PH

A 911 & Porsche world jorno drove it last year for a feature and he commented it had the sweetest gearbox he'd ever experienced on a 3.2 and was better than some later cars he'd tried.
As with all cabs, with the roof down the car is transformed, the view of the Speedster bubble in the rear mirror has to be a motoring great.
I do make an effort to keep it clean but not overly so (Zymol gets my vote) I try to avoid taking it out in the wet but don't make this a hard and fast rule.

Most of the cars available now are either a bit too pricey, run on chum or are ![]()
If you just want a look at one close up and perhaps a quick spin you are welcome too have a look at mine, I Live on London/Kent borders.
Cool. I may take you up on that! I'll PM you next time I'm in the UK area and will see if it suits you at all. *rubs hands furiously together with anticipation*
