How good/representative is are the "the ring" tracks for GTR? (need practice for real thing)
Just found this track pack:
www.m4driving.it/download/8709.html
which includes: - Nordschleife (Normal | 24h : Day, Dusk, Night, Dawn)
Just wondering if anyone can recommend a nuerburgring sim track for GTR?
-- have heard that the best one is on Project Gotham 2 on the crossbox, but I ain't got one of those.

Every Nurburgring track for GTR (and there are a few out there) Zurich24hrs which is the one you see there I think, The Mother and others are all based on the same Grand Prix Legends version of the Ring, just converted for use with GTR with various changes to the roadside graphics, track textures and newer higher kerbing.
The GPL Ring is of course the 1967 layout so none of the GTR tracks will be as it is today (no modern GP track link for instance) and since the GPL version was put together in 1997/8 there isn't the GPS accuracy to it. It's very good but some corners are not accurate along with dips and rises being off, Flugplatz being reduced in height since 1967 for instance. And none of the bumps of the real thing.

I don't think so, the versions for other games like Nascar Racing 2003 and Formula One Challenge are also conversions of the GPL Ring.
I think you could give the old GPL version a go but also watch some in car footage to see for changes or elevation differences. THe most noticable change I can recall from game to track is that the tight Wehrseifen corner has a tighter entry (it's almost a straight line approach in the game) - it's the tight left hander after the downhill series of corners that leads onto the short straight to the Adenauer Bridge.
Have a look at this. Hope the link on this thread still works - Uwe Alzen driving the Ring - www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=255048&f=42&h=0

I would recommend the GPL version as a good introduction for the real thing, just to get the hang of which corner comes next (apart from the South loop which is in the GPL version but is under the current GP track)
I used it to familiarise myself before a trip over there three years ago and found it very useful in the tricky to drive GPL cars. I got used to the location of the most dangerous corners as I was always crashing there and it made me be extra careful in real life.

Humm.. is that link working for you..? File not found for me

The PC GPL version is considerably different to the current track, and no PC version yet is very accurate, though a few people are working on VERY accurate (read GT4 quality) versions for RFactor, which from there will be ported to other more open sims I would expect!
Your best bet is a PS2 and GT4 for the most accurate track layout, but even that I feel suffers in certain areas from accuracy problems... real life video's for example convey the reality of the track more vividly as tree's change colour year round, lighting from sunny to overcast and so forth. GT4 just shows a summer time sunny day appearance which is often in stark contrast to how it really appears. I wouldn't really use it as much more than a rough guide to which way a corner goes next
Cheers
