I have a 2000 X reg Chim with 25K that has developed a rattle that is present at idle and increases with engine speed. Seems internal and has developed from nothing in the space of three days. She is booked in for a service with Shane at SFR on 4 May in any case. Should I get a second job to fund a big bill? Drives superbly and oil pressue is on the button. Should I leave her in the garage for now? Thoughts really welcomed...

Could well be the camshaft, does the rattle come from in between the heads?

I had a rattle that came in at 1800-2000rpm, or earlier if I accelerated hard. Turned out to be the gear-lever linkage.

Is it deffo coming from the engine?

Agree with that, got the rocker pad rattle on mine. If it is that attend to it quickly though.

The rocker pad pushes down on the valve stem, these can come "unstuck", new rocker arm then needed, however WHERE IS THE PAD!!!!

If it'smissing then it's dropped into the engine and been chewed up and spat out. Shouldn'thurt the engine but can cause excessive wear on the cam i'm told

If it's missing then it's rattling around amongst the valve gear somewhere, or dropped into the valley and playing tag with the whirly bits lower down. You might be lucky and find it sitting harmlessly in the sump, but you might not.

Indeed - there is no chance of it having been "spat out", it can't get anywhere near the combustion chamber. Sooner or later a chunk of steel like that roaming loose in the engine is going to cause some serious and wallet threatening damage. If that is the cause (rocker covers off to check) then you need to find the pad and remove it. Start with the sump, its easiest, and see if its there. It may be lodged in the mesh filter on the oil pickup pipe. If its not there then the next step is stripping the top end down as it must be under the valley gasket somewhere - I don't think it's possible for it to get into the timing cover (even the oil finds that difficult sometimes!).
