Is it possible to insure your car for a few days to drive in France? Is it just a case of phoning up your insurers and telling them dates, and paying what they want?

Check with your insurers, most policies cover you for at least some time these days, mine is 90 days. Some cheaper Comprehensive policies may go to "third party" in Europe.....check with them or read your policy carefully. I always stipulate that I want EU cover when asking for a quote..

At one time it was "usual" to get a "green card" insurance document for Europe. Due to EU rules that has now gone....

I don't even have to tell my insurers now....when I plan to go to Europe.

Again, phone them and check (after reading your policy) ask them all the questions, prior notice req'd? for how long? Fully Comp or 3rd Party? and such.

P.S. Don't forget your European Breakdown insurance from RAC or AA...No need to be a member!.....Enjoy your trip! ....

As standard, you will find that you automatically get 3rd party cover whilst abroad. However, it is always beneficial to upgrade this to comprehensive, as you can never know what might happen in an unfamiliar driving environment.

My policy gives me 3 x 30 days abroad at no extra cost but I HAVE to phone them and tell them the dates. No call, and I'm only covered 3rd party.

Everybody should check their small print for this.

We all know how they'll look for any tiny reason not to pay out.

I've a trip to Italy in a couple of weeks, and I phoned my Insurance company to see what the position was. I was expecting to pay a bit extra to be fully covered, but they said I was covered providing the trip didn't last longer than 30 days. I guess various insurance companies will have different ways of dealing with this situation, so the best thing you can probably do is phone your own insurance company to see what their policy is.

Saga give unlimited days with fully comp. I usually go to France 3 times per year. One ins. co. quoted me £30 for each trip so an extra £90/year on the premium. Zurich include 45 days per year abroad fully comp. provided I inform them of the dates of each trip.
