My wife has been sent a summons this morning for speeding along Watling St, A5, supposedly doing 40 in a 30. I was with her at the time and don't remember seeing a camera, really pissed off!

Is it rally cost effective to use a lawyer to contest the offence?

No, pay the fine, take the points & get a Road Angle..!!

BTW I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who fights these successfully on a regular basis, as I have tried all routes.

I agree with 009 re accept your fate, but IMHO the best scamera detector and soon to be released laser diffuser is the Drive-Smart, they have a forum on their web site and free updates for life. By the way be wary when buying a detector, after being stopped last year i asked the copper to target my sn**per with his laser gun, he fired straight at the bloody thing half a dozen times and not a peep, most of these things dont work despite what it says on the tin

Is this usual to get a summons for doing 40 in a 30?
Do they not usually simply issue a fixed penalty?

I guess its the camera opposite burger king in colindale. My other half got a ticket for 35mph and a friend got done at 32mph and she has had a clean license for over thirty years !!!. I don't know how they can set the limit that low ??? and get away with it.

Was that in a Peugeot Boxer or a Porsche Boxster?

Thought that the 'fuzz' always allow a 10% margin. i.e 33mph in a 30?
The speedo is never checked in a MOT test. So if your car is 30 years old, your speedo could be very inaccurate?
Yes, i know boxsters arent 30 years old yet, but i am talking hypothetically.

Most speedos over-read.

However, I always understood that there was a margin of discretion of 10% + 2mph. So, 35 mph in a 30 zone. now I know this was challenged by one of the road safety groups a few years ago, but I've never heard of anyone being prosecuted for doing 32 in a 30.

I was stopped for speeding in Germany (34 in a 30 - no points, just a small fine), and took the chance to have a chat with the Police that stopped me. I asked them about tolerance calculations for speeders, and they said that in Germany at least, they don't allow for much tolerance at all. I can't remember the specifics exactly, but it was something like +/- 2kmh up to 100 kmh and +/-3kmh over 100kmh. At about 120kmh then, there's really only about 2% tolerance. Which is worrying, because a magazine here used German Police equipment to record a house going 20mph. Between wonky radar equipment and inaccurate speedos, it's best to play it safe if there are cameras about - which is probably what makes them so dangerous. Not to mention the fact that the cameras here go off in front of you rather than behind you. I've had these things go off on me a few times (still no points on my licence as they were all minor infractions) and these things are so bright that they've almost left Hiroshima-like radiation burns depicting my startled noggin etched on the headrests of my car.

Did you get an NIP before the actual summons?

Just a point to note with a laser detector, if it goes off you have a 50-50 chance that you have received a 'bounce' signal or have been targetted.

If you have been targetted and the detector lights up it is telling you 'you're nicked'

Ask me how I know

So did I and I would think that most of us guess that cameras give you a 10mph margin but not this one.
