Has anyone got a rundown of their running costs for eitehr a 3.2 or 4 litre XJ (prob '99 on)? MPG i understand is low to mid 20s which is fine for me as my audi does 17. What are the service intervals like? Do they have a habit of falling to bits or are tehy a fairly sensible prospect? I'm interested in something of this ilk but i'm having the usual heart/head argument against an LS400.

Just purchaed an x300 (not an x308)
Fuel enconomy after 300miles is 25mpg
Head justified the purchase as the car is pretty straight forward mechanically (drive train similar if not identical to XJ40) and the electronics are a step forward over the XJ40 (my opinion only).
Are you seriously considering a toyota?

Well, yes. It'll be my everyday car for 500+ miles a week. Currently using my Audi which, at nearly 170k miles, is just getting a little too unreliable. I'm told that the LS400 is achingly reliable whilst also being all the things i want (comfortable, quiet, quick). But that interior is the exact opposite of the Jag's, and there's just no style. Hence head saying toyota and heart saying Jag.

X300 should be perfectly reliable. Go for the 4.0L as there is so little to be gained from the 3.2 in terms of economy. Engine is bombproof, body is solid, and electrics are a lot better than older cars.

Step away from the Toyota, man you got no soul...

Got 4.0litre. When asked in the pub what do you drive. A jag makes people listen. Brilliant car but don't go to a main dealer.

Erring towards a 4 litre, probably Exec or Sovereign (is there much difference spec-wise?).

Both well specced, but Sovereign just has those little things that matter, like a cigar lighter in the back etc.

Try the Jag-Lovers website, there is probably a range brochure you can download to compare specs.

With used values as low as they are, it's worth getting as good a spec as possible so at least your car maintains a premium over lower spec Jags.

I'd go for 4L Daimler, even better spec

I'll have had my X300 for 10 nears next month. It's a 3.2 Sport, from a reliability point of view it's hard to see how the Lexus could have bettered it.

I looked at the LS400 before I bought the Jag and it was very impressive. It does what it sets out to do extreamly well. It's a really comfy sofa that you sit on at A and you climb off at B. It was quiet and comforable. It went fairly well, and went around corners OK too. If this is what you want out of a car then the LS400 was ideal. It was however completely souless. I didn't feel any sense of involvement with it. I didn't feel I could ever love it - respect it... Oh yes. The engineers who built it I guess have suceeded 100% in what they set out to do, but I doubt driver involvement or passion where on the list of requirements.

The Jag on the other hand is also extream quiet and comfortable. Over many road surfaces I think it beat the Lexus. Over the concrete motorway section I tried the Lexus over the Jag was much better. Over some other roads the Lexus would have been quieter.

The Jag though has other things that I didn't feel that the Lexus engineers even tried for.
As you say your heart says JAG, I don't supposed many people will ever say that about the LS400.

The X300 (and X308) look great.

It's great fun to drive. When you want to play... it wants to play too. In a way you don't expect such a big and heavy saloon car to. Most of the time you're not aware of the bulk exept in rapid changes from turning 1 way followed immediately by turning the other. The momentum has to go somewhere I guess. But whilst it fun to play with it is never in your face. If you want to sit back and cruise it does that too. It's also fun to drive slowly, not just driving like you stole it.

From a reliability point of veiw it's been great. Apart from it's regular yearly service (I don't do the miles your suggesting) the only thing it's ever needed was new suspension bushes.

The only problem with the car as far as I'm concerned, is when your come to need to change where else would you go. That's the problem Jaguar themselves face at the moment I guess.

Oh, I've got the 3.2 which is probably sweeter than the the 4, but if I had to choose again I'd probably opt for a 4, a little more torque always comes in handy and the 4 comes with a better auto box and traction control. Mind you, the 3.2 isn't short on torque, it's not like say the 735BM which I felt always needed far to many revs to make anything happen.

I'd suggest you try and drive both. That way you'll know you made the right decision. But having driven them both I would be surprised if you'd choose the Lexus or else you wouldn't be the sort of person who read pistonheads.

Good luck looking

XJ12 of course!

Lexus idea is now out of the window, had some really good insurance quotes on a 4.0 Soveriegn (i'm 22, so it was a bit of a worry). Now just need to fix the Audi (anyone got a turbo downpipe hose for an AAN engine?) then sell it (anyone want an Audi 100 S4 for £4k?) spend a month or two in the works van then spunk £6k on a 4.0 Sov. Splendid.

Funny you should say that. As mentioned above, I had a 4.0L XJ40 Sovereign, which I traded in form my current X308 XJR. I'm toying with the idea of swapping the XJR for an end-of-line 6.0L V12 XJ40 asn using the change to buy something stupid - perhaps a griff?

In the end, the most fun I get out of the XJR is when I drive it balls out - I could get that (and some) from a TVR. But the Sovereign was alway most fun just cruising. It was good for the soul. I imagine the V12 will be heaven on wheels...
