Finaly my power stearing has stopped whining - I parked the car - left it for about an hour came back and no whine - usually i would be happy with such a result - but i have no power steering - which i found out as i tried to get out of the space i had parked in - i'm so used to power steering that i was shocked how hard it is to drive without - i have checked all the fuses above the pedal box and checked to see if any cables are loose and that it has fluid in it i'm all out of ideas - anyone able to shed some light please? - i'm reluctant to garage it on such a great day....

thanks

I think the PAS fuse might be somewhere else, like in/above the passenger footwell. I might be talking bollox though. Do a search and you might find it as I'm sure I read something about it on here.

I think you may be right, when my PAS fuse went (at the MOT station! typical!), I am sure SP told me that the fuse was located elsewhere, can't remember where though, but am sure it's not with the rest of the fuses - could be wrong though!

Noises that stop concern me. I once had a whining gearbox that was smelly. When it went quiet I was quite relieved until it went tit's up on the M1.

Not sure how your Pas works but fluid pressure and supply would be the first thing I'd check. Do you have a belt that could be getting loose or is it all electric?

thanks for replies - have pulled out carpet, etc from passenger footwell and found things like alarm and door modules + power cables for amp but still nothing that looks like a fuse did find a strange object with a turn'y knob on it and what looks like a coper wire running up into the bulkhead- I have also checked the relay in the engine bay at the front right hand side (looking from the front of the car) of the air reservoir and that appears to work - i'm at a loss - anyone have another idea - will have to see if i can get it to a garage monday. thanks again.

I think some people have had the electric pump blow.

Can't see why the fuse wouldn't be with the others.

Check in the handbook.

ok - so found the problem - there is a flat blade type (not the type that can be found at Halfords) 80amp fuse near the battery - passenger wheel off, battery cover out and then found it 4 hours after starting. its not in the handbook anywhere and as no one really knew where it is located (thanks all who tried ) I will try and add it to the FAQ to save anyone else pulling stuff out - have temporarily soldered the fuse until I can get a new one tomorrow - as everyone who could stock such a fuse is shut.

Not a good idea - If its pulled an 80 A fuse there could be an intermittent short somewhere. Soldering the fuse may lead to a fire!

Yes, I'd be worried to! Think of the insurance situation if it went up in smoke!!

Try to find a replacement fuse asap.

ok points taken, i now have the fuse which i will replace when i get home. and reason it died was not due to an electrical issue - the plastic casing was damaged which caused the fuse to /tear/......

thanks all again.
