The best your mate can do is go in with his/her eyes open and a grand or so in savings in case of things that go wrong. Condition is MUCH more important than age and a car thats been driven regulararly is a better choice (high milage = good)
And be prepared for a grin like someones wedged a coat hanger in your mouth. I popped out today for some petrol just to see if my fuel consumption has gone through the roof or if its the gauge (looks like the gauge) and only did 2 miles (too wet for a hoon) and still had a grin on my face from the kids at the petrol station staring and saying wow lots...

If he's never owned anything like a Chim before it might be an idea to go to a club meeting first. That way he can take a look at a variety and maybe get a ride in a couple.
