I have 3 points from an SP30 in March 2000. I have been told that you can get them removed after 3 years. How do I go about this?

Pies is right,You can't get them removed yet.

The points stay on your licence for 4 years, but they only count for 3 years towards totting up.

After 4 years you can send your licence back to Swansea and you can have a clean one again.

By the way, if you commit another traffic offence, the court will, in all likelihood, have a DQ3 (printout) of your whole driving record when it comes to deal with you, so presenting a clean licence is a fairly hollow gesture.

Leave the points on your licence to remind you what a great country you live in.

Also don't bother unless you are changing address because there is a "very reasonable administration charge" (bollox fee) for getting rid of points only.

The charge is £18.

Just out of interest , the DQ3, how far back does this go, i.e. more than 5 years? or is it your entire history?

Just a thought....

If your post code has changed recently you can get a new licence to reflect this.

My post code changed not so long back and I did not need an admin fee to get a new one, thus removing "old points" from my licence.

IMHO, not a very sensible option. Less relevant than it used to be, but if you get pulled for a borderline indiscretion Plod will/may make a judgement call and will take many factors into account, state of license included.

Having scribble for prior misdemeanours will inevitably colour their judgement, however old they might be. I'd rather come across as Mr Squeaky Clean having an uncharacteristic lapse than Mr Habitual Wrongdoer taking the piss.

Before anyone comments, yes I realise Plod is not entitled to view the endorsement section (try and stop them), and no they are not Judge Dredd (but I'd prefer him to Mr Gatsonides).

victormeldrew has a fair point, but I expect that the traffic officer will be influenced more by the fact that he has just pulled you in your Lotus/TVR than by the spent SP30 from 1992.

Indeed, I offer the view that if he stops you in a TVR/Lotus and the only thing on your licence is a spent speeding conviction, he is likely to be impressed by your evident self control.

If you don't want the officer to be prejudiced by your bad record, then leave your licence at home. He will be probably be giving you a HORT1 for your insurance and MOT in any event.

Mind you, if I had a spent endorsement for excess alcohol, no insurance or disqualified driving, I would want it off my licence as soon as possible for exactly the reasons victormeldrew puts forward.

The DQ3 (printout) is of your whole driving record from the day you applied for a provisional licence. (or earlier in the case of most 15 year olds convicted of TWOC)

Courts request a DQ3 from Swansea in all traffic cases in order to avoid unnecessary adjournments where the defendant has lost/forgotten to bring his licence, or simply fails to turn up at court.

In my experience, if you produce a licence, there is rather less chance that the court will look at the DQ3, so there is some limited merit in sending your licence back to Swansea to have it cleansed.
