I read in autocar the other week that the government have just approved 30 million for more speed bumps. I cannot believe this government - speed bumps are SO bad - the increase pollution so much, increase fuel consumption, wear the car out quicker. The government are alway harping on about reducing emissions, and traffic as it bad for the environment, and yet here they are making it worse. Is this madness ever going to end??

I was unfortunate enough to drive an Omega Estate last week for several days. I was astonished at how little a speed bump affected it.They could be ignored with impunity. Clearly this was a (MAD) design feature of the car. In every *other* respect its handling required significantly reduced speed. (Corners were NOT its strong point....!) In our Tiv each speed bump has to be negotiated with extreme care and preferably driven around to avoid grounding. In order to make the bumps effective against such slushy monsters as the Omega they will need to be made more and more vicious until they actually *damage* Type Approved vehicles like my Chimaera. MAD MAD MAD. For this I pay my taxes..... Disgusted of Basingstoke

Chicaning the road seems just as effective and:- (1) provides a narrowing for pedestrians to cross more safely. (2) creates a longer obstruction, which means the car's speed is reduced for longer, which ... (3) encourages you to drive more smoothly between them (4) they can be seen more clearly than speed humps at night. (5) doesn't allow soft suspension to plane over them. I've got no problem with traffic calming measures on residential streets to keep traffic on the main drags and protect kids. I do object to having to have the chin spoiler reattached to my car at regular intervals and getting rammed up the pipe every time I drop to walking pace to avoid grinding my car to bits.

I'd shove a bollard in the middle and offset the pavement extensions. At least the cars couldn't hit each other without first going up the central curbstone.

Thing with Speed bumps is No one takes any notice of `em, except TVR/Sports car drivers !! We crawl along `em at 2mph, to see the car behind just bounce over them like they weren`t even there...
