People are greedy and the dollar signs in their eyes often cloud their common sense. This is how all the nigerian scams and similar things work.

My guess is they had a 'boiler room' type sales team and this rung up leads informing them that they had an option to buy at $1. They will be released to the public on such and such a date at $3, and after a year they could be as high as $50 each.
