Urgent - S-Video and Plasma displays
Discussion
My friend has a Plasma panel that has no internal tuner. It does have composite and S-Video inputs however. I recomended that he purchase an Scart to S-Video adaptor so that he could connect a Freeview box up to it. The picture is in Black and White for some reason that we cannot work out? Any ideas as to what we need to do? Its a Sony PFM 42X1.

Composite is the worst possible connection to use quality wise. Have you tried playing with the output options of the Freeview and the input options of the panel?
SCART supports 3 types of connection; Composite, S Video and RGB, with composite the worst and RGB the best.
It's a long time since I had freeview but my Sky Box only outputs Composite or RGB (as does my parents Telewest box), but I would have thought that the freeview box would output either;
a) Composite and S Video
or
b) Composite and RGB
Both of these will be over SCART.
However TV/Panels generally don't accept all three of these connection over each SCART socket. Generally (but not always) SCART 1 is composte and RGB and SCART 2 is composite and S Video.
So you have to check that:
1) Your Freeview is set to output the best quality it can
2) The SCART lead is plugged into a compatable socket on the panel
3) The SCART socket used on the panel is configued to accept the signal being passed to it by the freeview box
Oh and
4) Make sure your SCART lead is fully wired. Many, especially older and cheaper leads only have the pins for composite and audio connected together
So if your SCART lead feels a little flimsey like it hasn't got all the wires in it, that might be something else worth checking.
Good Luck
