Met/City of London Recruitment
Discussion
Thanks very much LC. I had a quick look on the Police could you site but it seems BTP are also not recruiting at present.
I've seriously considered local forces (Cambs and Beds would be mine) but simple economics rules them out as I'd be taking a 14k pay cut in order to join the Met so simple couldn't afford the 5k diff on a county force.
Is there any upper age limit on recruiting as well? I'm 30 at present but don't want to get too old beforehand....
Edited to add - mis-read the site, they have 0 current vacancies but are sending out app packs so I'll download one tonight and have a look.

I've always had an eye on the Police Force as a career, but have been put off by the constant obstacles put in my way, not to mention the fact that West Yorks (my local force) has closed its books until 2008 - and the national graduate scheme has been abandoned. Im graduating this year and want to get on with my life, so the Police wont be the career for me![]()
Friends sister joined the Met about 4 years ago from Uni, think he said shes just been accepted onto the diplomatic protection team (or similar - license to carry firearms etc as well) and is doing pretty well for herself and loving every minute. There is still a career but like anything you have to work for it. I've wanted to join the police since I was 18 but until 2 years ago my eyesight was too bad. This has now been corrected with Lasik and re-opened the door to me. It'll mean a huge sacrifice financially but I believe work enjoyment and fulfillment are more important, especially as you spend most of your life at work.

After speaking to several serving officers at careers fairs etc, it does indeed seem that the BTP are the 'backdoor' entrance, allowing you a direct transfer after two years. This, in my opinion, sounds like your best bet.
Thats a good sign, wasn't sure how easy it would be to transfer into the mainstream from the transport police but it certainly seem like there'll be a better chance than waiting for the Met to finally re-open their recruitment to all.
I heard that they are now having to run a 'literacy hour' at Hendon for the new recruits. Is there any truth in this?
I'm sure BTP are getting wise to this and won't be standing the training charges only to see people piss off to the proper police after their probation.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. Whilst on paper skills are going up, in reality they are going down.
Being able to read and write to a reasonable level isn't a requirement for a degree let alone joining the cops these days.

Can't you just declare yourself to be Black - would they dare to disagree?
Just dont use the word "black" in your application....or "white" for that matter.....theyre banned in Tony's Britain !....
Chalkboard anyone ?.....

I must say, it didn't suprise me. There was a certain amount of rule bending when I was there in 1994. The written exam was dis-regarded for some people and English Tutors laid on after hours to help them improve. One person had the written skills of a 10 year old (I'm not exaggerating) Needless to say, that level of support wasn't received on division.
