Sorry for taking up cyber space with useless twitterings , but I gotta get this off my chest.
My 996 is in the opc getting a minor (I hope!) fault cleared under warranty. Seeing as I was 4 hours from home , I received a nissan primera to make my way back to the boosem (we survive on alcohol..)of my family.
steering : bag of shite
gearbox : bowl of jelly
passing maneuvers :
etc.
I apologise to all offended primera drivers , but I refuse to retract!!!
My point ? It was with a certain amount of shock that I realised how feckin fantastic a car the 996 is , what a bloody great pleasure every nuance of it is (except of course , the nuance that has it laid up in opc-land!)
If it were outside my door right now I'd head out and give it a great big hug.
I entreat you , the lucky few , to do the same .... right now.
special dispensations have been granted which , for a limited period of time , will enable non water based 911 owners to join the love-in

Sorry to hear about the problem with the 996. Hope it is sorted soon.

That just cracks me up! You know , the zee man's got some good points there , but most of all , it proves one thing ... with a half decent bit of grey matter , you can justify anything......
I know the feeling ballcock. After just 2 weeks of 911 ownership mine started mis-firing. Went to OPC where they had to strip the engine to find the fault.
Worst thing was, i didn't have the car for the long Easter weekend
As I'm under 25 they couldn't give me a "prestige" hire care so i got a Maxda 6.
I'm not sure the car could have been any different from mine (apart from same colour)! Really made me appreciate how good 911's are. Saved a load on petrol though!
Turns out an inlet tapet had gone.... all under warranty and seems in perfect working order for this long weekend.

I had to hand back my car to get new leather put on the seats recently.
The garage lent me a Merc SL55 overnight. Pleasant car, pretty fast under acceleration but a bit anaesthetic and soulless. I didn't even realise it was an AMG until I got it home and looked round the back. It was worth about twice the value of my Porsche (in monetary terms, of course) but I wouldn't have taken the swap.
The next day, while waiting for my car, I also test drove an Aston DB7 Vantage. One of the biggest disappointments of my life. I've hankered after one of these for years, on the basis of the looks alone, but I couldn't believe how bad it was to drive. Lots of power, certainly, but it didn't feel solid or confidence inspiring. I know it takes a while to get used to any car's characteristics and foibles but I don't think I would ever feel entirely comfortable or safe driving the DB7 at speed.
The fact that my head was bent to the right at a 30 degree angle to fit inside probably didn't help either!!
Driving home in my Porsche, I felt a deep contentment. Well-planted on the road, enough usable power to make it fun to drive, and a pleasant, comfy cabin. The car just feels...right.
P.S. Can anyone explain why Porsche owners are occasionally accused of being smug?

Know the feeling. have just got the Boxster back from the paintshop after tooling around in a Volkswagon Polo 1.2 for the last week. I even had to use this funny twirly handle thing on the door to wind the window down! FFS ....
At least when I get a service the OPC usually wheel out a Cayenne, which is sort of fun for a couple of days. Only time I've used our friendly aforementioned Swindon based establishment they gave me a Mini Cooper S, which was quite a blast around the lanes on the way home.
