Want to get on a bike.
Discussion
Hi all, hope you can help.
As my car is up for sale now,
im going to be lacking a bit of fun at the weekends. (well adrenaline rush...you know what i mean)
So next year, or when i have got the money i want to do my bike test.
I am familiar <--- (spelling?) to riding off road bikes and i had a moped (dont laugh), but now i want to move up a step.
I just want to know what i have to do, what the restrictions are e.t.c. i'm only 19 but fancy an R6?? is that possible? how much is the test? what would insurance be like on the R6 or is it too powerful for a beginner in the rule book?
Any help appreciated

You need to do CBT and then sit your test. Once you pass you are limited to 33bhp for either 2 years (boo) or until you turn 21 and sit your test again on a bigger bike to get a derestricted licence. Given your age you'd have to decide which way to do it. Staying on the restricted licence for the full 2 years would be cheaper but a lot more boring.
CBT is about £90 with bike hire thrown in. Lessons on a 125 are usually about £50 for a couple of hours, again bike included. Reckon on anything from 4 to 20 hours tuition before test depending on how good you are on the road after CBT. (as you can see the standard varies
)
Gear and bike are extra, as are theory and practical test fees.
Edited to add: insurance on an R6 would be a bit steep, IMO, but best to get a few test quotes online somewhere.

Restricted R6 will be good for 90-95 I imagine (my restricted SV will just about hit 90), still very quick up to that point and is also a good way of learning cornering/general riding skills for a couple of years. Then you don't have to get a new bike when you want a faster one, just take the restrictor out

What, are you saying that you ride a bike with a removable restrictor in it and leave it in? ......

Thought I'd better leave it in for a bit as my best mate came off his bike within 24 hours of getting it, then other things got in the way of biking for a while, and now the MOT is coming up so it's coming out then.

how easy are the restrictors to remove, and where are they?
Depends on the bike, some are electronic on the ECU (lots of newer bikes do this), some are washers in the exhaust system (like the Bandit) and some are washers just before the carbs (like my SV). Exhaust ones are a piece of piss to take out (take exhaust off, take washer out, put exhaust back on), carb ones look quite tricky (hence I'm not doing it), no idea about the electronic ones.
