Digital Mileage Reading Problem
Discussion
Hi all,
Can you Help.
Looking at possibly buying a 94M 5.o Chimaera. A 2 owner car with full history and lovelly condition.
Just one small problem that the mileage counter Zero's every time you switch the ignition off. I am told this is common with the rare digitial counters.
Anyone out there have experience with this?
How much to fix it?
Thanks

Mine used to do that. It is caused by the battery that powers the counter being flat. Only a couple of quid to replace....BUT (don't you hate that word) to get to the battery you have to get inside the dashboard cover to get the speedo out. Once you have got the speedo out you have to prise the front bezel off which is bit like opening a tin can without a can opener. Then you replace the battery. Then you have to crimp the front bezel on again and replace the speedo etc etc.
There is probably an easier way - but it will involve use of credit cards and you will have to do it again in 5 years time.

Had thought of that myself. Fortunatley this car at an MOT in November before there was this problem.so in this case should hopefully not effect, providing i do it promptly. As you might see from the other thread(posted twice silly me)providing there is proof the mileage can be set to were it should be ish.
Used to work for Volkswagen and late mk3 golfs had same problem apart from had to replace whole clock set up. Did not cause a problem with values providing was backed up by stamped book.

hi smb
my 95 4HC has a digital reader. this too failed during it's history. the failures and fixes (it happened twice) were logged in the service history. it didn't put me off from buying, although i was buying from a reputable specialist dealer.
had the car for 14 months now and it hasn't played up since.

As I mentioned in the other thread. Most of this (mine anyway) LCD speedo's have a small £3 watch battery in them, that keeps a small memory chip of the millage. If the battery goes, the memory is wipped and the clock is reset to Zero. Mole changed me £50 quid, to suppy and fit the battery, which I did not think was too bad as they have to get the speedo out of the dash, but you can do it yourself quite easily I have been told.
Did not know that you could have the original mileage added back on the clock though.

My speedo has an intermittent fault, works most of the time, occasionally doesn't. All appears well at the diff end, sensor gap correct and good connections everywhere and the car idles correctly all the time, even when speedo not working.
Anyone know what is involved in getting to the back of the speedo to check the connections/wiring? Can I assume that if Mole Valley charge £50 to change the speedo battery it can't be too bad?
