Britains should have guns
Discussion
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/2656875.stm recons that we should all be allowed to arm ourselves.
Basically our crime rates are now higer than the US for everything but rape and murder, and we are closing rapidly on murder, and it's all because the crim's are not scared of anything any more. Not likely to be sent to jail and cannot be harmed by their victims. In the US the crim's are more frightened of the vitims than the Police because they never know who will start shooting. Only 13% of burglaries in the US are when people are at home - in the UK it's 53%.
I have to admit I would like to, atleast, be legally allowed to defend myself and be able to carry something to help me with that. I wouldn't want to carry a knife or gun but I wouldn't mind being allowed to carry a nightstick for self-defence against the mugger with a knife.

The only way to wipe out drug dealers and gun dealers would be to legalise the whole lot.
That way, gang killings fall, mugging people for money for drugs falls and burglary falls. Killing three birds with one stone!
Edited to add, I'm in the states at the moment and I feel a damned site safer here than in the UK!

Gladly the populous are starting to see this as the only option. Oh, and a fourth bird that it kills is that we would rid this country of the puritannical bollocks enforced by America that got us into this trouble in the first place...

No it doesn't, unemployed heroin addicts still need money for drugs (I'm guessing that tax levels will be of he same order as tobacco), so they have to nick it, Gang members buy gun from a reputable shop to kill other gang members
People killed during burglary increase exponentialy
Why aren't the people allowed to decide for themselves whether or not they should take drugs or have gun?
By making it illegal it becomes more attractive to people!
My room mate in the states has a gun magazine delivered every month, where you can order a gun/ammo and have it mailed to your door -- he doesn't get the mag for the guns, but for the camping equipment the mag also sells.
Illegal or legal people get whatever they want if they try hard enough and it's partly because they get that BUZZ because they're doing something naughty.
He has enough sense to make his own decisions --

Not all gun's are illegal, I have a shotgun in the house and I'm allowed to, I've had the firearms officer round to check it out and I have a permit to keep the weapon. I wouldn't use it on anyone though, even if they were in my house without permission, I'd far rather beat the living F
K out of them, much more satisfying, altough could be rather risky.
How about guns which fire rubber bullets, you could shoot them, then beat the living F

That's quite interesting, I was under the impression that the statistics showed the opposite (don't have any to hand) We need the google expertise of Mr Zee to settle this

Personally I feel safe here, but it's not getting any better. I certainly wouldn't feel safer if I had a gun, but I knew all burglars would too

Interesting idea..... Whilst legalising everything may not inspire any of us to suddenly take up a new addiction.
What about generations to come. Before long it would become "the norm" and your childrens children would be able to buy a couple of grams of cocaine at the tuck shop!
I do however believe if someone breaks into my house while I am sleeping. That I should be within my rights to defend myself in anyway possible, whether it be electric shock, plastic bullits or a cricket bat!

Under the numerous white papers that have been produced about various ways to go about this it has been suggested that habit forming drugs such as Heroin be provided to users in rehabilitation completely free of charge.
I know that it does say on rehabilitation, but I have honestly never met anyone who actually wants to be a smack head, so given the option most will rehabilitate. Its not that much of a lifestyle choice really.

Good point Ben, if guns were legalised whats stopping burglars using them to protect themselves from gun wielding homeowners. If anything burglaries may go up as the burglars would feel safer and less vunerable, or we'd keep getting reports of shootouts everywhere.
I must say I agree with Mr Zee, given the chance I would have a gun in my house. I'd have no problem using it on th f
kers who broke in
The theory being if people don't do anything wrong, I don't shoot them. As Vice City says at the beginning, Trespassers will be shot, survivors will be shot again (or have the living shit beat out of them)

98% of stats are made up right?
The States has twice the population of the UK, and yet I read here that the UK is catching up in all crimes except for muder and rape. Is that relative?
As Matt says, you save on prison bills etc and spend it on rehabilitation and more importantly EDUCATION just like speed kills?
Smoking is legal, but education over the years has reduced the amount of people that smoke.
Some might argue that in the beginning almost everyone smoked, true, but as more scientific evidence came to light, people were able to get the facts and make their own decisions.
Same goes for prohibition in the 20's, booze is legal now but look at the black market that was created from that?
As for future generations having a free for all on drugs, I would like to think that in a society in which smoking, sex, marriage are legal at 16, I would be able to educate my kids properly and pass on some commonsense.

I too used to live in the states and will agree that while there I felt much safer than in the UK. But I think much of this is down to there being far more respect for the police.
I am sure far more people would think twice about giving a copper some lip if he was carrying a gun and willing to lock them up for the night for as much as a drunken argument.
incorrigible said: Fair point Matt, do you disagree about the gang members shooting each other with legit weapons too
>> Edited by incorrigible on Tuesday 14th January 15:15
Not in the slightest, gang members can shoot each other with legit guns, dodgy guns, converted replicas or potato guns for all I care.
The thing is though if drugs (as the common misconception that they are the root of all social evil would have us believe) are made legal then you are removing the control of supply from that of criminals into that of the government. Actually thinking about it I think I would prefer the criminals to be licensed than let the government balls it up.
