For those who have not seen it on pistonheads - speed traps based on measuring sound and using doppler shift..... we will all be after silencers now!!!!

I can see a flaw with this.

It's been tested too, by recording vehicles travelling at known speeds and comparing results. The system measured the correct speed within a few percentage points in 32 out of 33 instances.

1 in 33 failure rate? Get a decent lawyer and it would never stand up in court.

Also, I am no expert but say for example you lowered the final drive ratio, wouldn't the engine still be making the same noise at say 3k rpm in top but be going much faster?

I think the idea of placing cameras in cat's eyes to catch driver's out is going way beyond too far! Wher will it all end. How long before every car is fitted with a GPS system that relays your speed...if yre going too fast for the road you are using?

This is already possible. Theyve been testing it in the US using magnetic sensors in the road that the car picks up and uses for road placement and speed to drive itself. It would be very easy (one would imagine - Im no auto sparky!) to link a car's GPS with the engine management system and simply prevent it from going faster than the applicable speed limit. Once the govt electronically links your car reg with your license, you will soon be fined and have the points removed before youve even exited the road youre speeding on! Unless they implement the speed limiter first, which would negate that. I bet they dont though...
Think yourselves lucky the UK has no multanovas!

Doppler works on rate of change of engine noise fundementals as it approaches, passes and leaves shifting fundementals within sound stream. It is Engine speed independent although it will rely on a constant speed/engine speed. IF you are accelerating or decelerating hard then that could confuse the system....just like it does with doppler radar.
