Clutch problem

Hi Guys, I finished my car today and took it for an MOT, it passed which is great but it showed up a problem with the car. The clutch is slipping

When it was on the ramps I could see that there simply wasn't enough clearance for clutch to release fully.

I phoned V8Dev (where the parts were sourced)and as usual they were very helpful and identified the problem. The problem is that the clutch cover has an additional metal ring located on the centre, pic below:



This part should not be there. It needs to be removed to allow more clearance.

Now the question. I would love for V8 to do the work for me but don't have a trailor to get the car to them. The AA will only recover to the nearest garage so I can't do that either. The car will drive (it will cruise at 40mph with no slip at all, but will then slip with the slightest tickle of the throttle) but I only want to go a VERY short distance.

I have to go back out to Germany to work on Tuesday and I'm snowed under until then, so I have not got the option of doing it myself.

Has anyone got any ideas? Places to take it to? Cheap low loader company (I'm 92miles from V8 Dev!)? I live in Solihull near Birmingham airport if it's any help.

I'm gutted that it has to come apart again to be honest. I missed last summer totally because of this rebuild, I don't want to miss any of this one

Can't help with the clutch I'm afraid, but can I point out that it's an extremely bad idea to have the lifter gallery painted - the paint will come off and eventually find its way to the sump where it will probably block the pickup strainer. Thanks Rob, I can't get hold of him at the minute so I've just sent him an Email.

Paul, thanks for the concern. The engine on the RPI site had the lifter bores painted as well, hence why it was a problem. My block was chemically clean before painting with a thin coat of POR 15 engine paint (a million time better than normal engine laquer). It's often done in the states on their V8s with no problems and helps oil drainage. I've developed engines for a living, so I'm not a numpty when it comes to these things but I will keep an eye on it, ta.

Anyway, back on topic. Can anyone recommend anywhere very local to me to do the work. I'll only trust my baby with someone who comes highly recommended.

If you pay to upgrade you AA cover,i think they will tow it anywhere as opposed to the nearest garage

Stoke is a bit far Ben, I'd prob just send it back to V8 if going that far. Cheers for the thought though.

At the moment I'm waiting for V8 developments to get back to me with a quote for the work. I will more than likely send it to them.

Mike, according to 'The AA' none of their cover plans would allow me to have the car taken to V8. But a closer place might be an option.

Just a quick update.

The car is going to V8 Developments Tuesday morning with the help of Richard at CarTrans.

While it's there I'll have the clutch done, wheel alignment carried out (they can farm it out to a local place apparently) and also Rob will set up the fuel pressure and timing and anything else to get it running at its best on a standard map.

So when I return from work on Tuesday 12th I'll pick it up and start to enjoy my Griff at last! I can't wait

I'm away for work Andy from Tuesday until the 12th. So I won't be able to make it

And the weekend I get back i have to go and see the brunette, so I won't be able to drive the Griff much then either I may have to take her a hotel a long way away just so I can drive the car

How's the Stealth getting on? Got that smile off ya face yet

I'll see how I get on with the H404 when I've put some real miles on the car.

Yeah I'll get to the Bulls Head as soon as possible, unfortunatly I don't know when that'll be yet due to working away. But I defo want to get myself down there, not least to see your car and Steve's.
