The inevitable has happened.... My odometer has stopped working. Can anybody tell me if there's any easy way to rectify this ie any loose connections etc? Or will i have to get it taken out and refurbed. I'd like to get it done quickly so the mileage isn't affected- do they refurb it and leave the mileage the same or not????

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

James

howdo

It may not be knackered - whats the mileage - an awful lot of them get stuck trying to turn over the extra digit when hitting the ten thousands.

If thats the case then try reseting the trip repeatedly
or put it into reverse or finally - like mine, just drive it for a while.

Alternatively mine also stopped when the transducer on the drive shaft breathed its last.

Is the speedo not working as well as the actual odometer?

Hope this helps

Mine died at 20,064 miles. It was replaced by a new one. The mileage is now wrong on the current one. You just need to make sure the change out is documented in the service record and you tell any buyers in the future. The same also happened on my furst car which was a Mini.

Check the transducer on the diff first. It's a known weak-point and does wear smooth. After that your probably onto taking the dash top off and playing.

Leven may be able to provide you with an immediate (refurbished) replacement in return for your knackered one and a few notes to cover the refurbishment.

Recently got mine refurbished. The mileage stays the same.

Recently had to have a new one. Our car has now done about 300 miles!

...and about 46,000 previously

Thanks for this chaps.

Tried resetting the trip repeatedly but that's broken too now! The car has stopped on 37890 miles, and after a good drive last night doesn't seem to be going anywhere?

Any more tips?

My trip was also broken, cost around £70 for refurb. Took three weeks with www.speedycables.co.uk.

How much of a job is it to take the dash off? I can do minor stuff but it scares the hell out of me to be honest....

Plenty of threads on dash removal over the past few weeks. It's not that hard, just take your time. You may get lucky and find that it has been off already and that the bolts have been cut down to size and the nuts replaced with wing nuts. That will make the task really easy.

Not sure of how the mechanicals get triggered, but if different bits are failing gradually it might indicate the the signal from the transducer is getting weaker and weaker.
