Locked seatbelt

Doing a grand job replacing the carpets which meant the seat belt mounts had to come out. I now find that one of them has retracted all of the loose strap in and has sort of locked up I can`t release it, any ideas, please, pretty please. I thought about a small mammal etc, and the thought of something warm and furry in the car may upset `er indoors.
Small mammals no good for this one I'm afraid.
Specially trained insects are what you need - they can use two legs to tug the belt gently, two to hold back the inertia lock, and two to unpeel a kitkat for their break.
If you can't find a suitable paramilitary insect, you could try holding the belt roll in exactly the position it would be in when mounted in the car - the belt won't move if the reel is upside down or on its side (or tilted by even a few degrees from the position it should be in) - the inertia balls will lock it.
