4 wks ago i put a deposit on a 97 cerb. i had a inspection carried out and it ended up having the engine out to sort an oil leak. when they attempted to drop the car off it started over heating - apparently the system needed bleeding...... the next attempt to drop it off ended with smoke coming through one of the vents and a plastic burning smell, the ecu is now sat at the factory being tested. would you still buy it????

Who did the inspection and who is doing the work?

I dont think you can answer that on here, but take look at whether you can get it to a decent Indy; it may save your deposit.

If you cant, take the advice already posted, dont go there

It doesnt sound to me like the current work is being done competantly...

But dont be put off, try those with the reputation for supplying the very best of Cerby's

heh heh! thanks for the plug nick! I took mine out for a drive tonight and after driving a hire car in cyprus for the last week and my ranger this week, id forgotten how quick the cerb is! Not sure how much longer ill be keeping it up for sale!

As for your predicament stevo69 - it doesnt sound like youve selected a good one there im afraid! How much dep did you put down? It may be a shame to loose it, but you may save a lot more by NOT buying it.

The work is being done by TVR!!!! And the inspection. Surely u cant get more reputable than the company itself. Ive spoke to the previous owner and he never had a problem and couldnt believe it when i told him.

You say TVR are carrying out the work I assume you mean a dealer rather than the factory?

If you like the car, and you obviously do otherwise you wouldn't have agreed top buy it, I would be tempted to demand that all repairs are guaranteed, i.e. if you drive away and 3 days later another problem associated with the engine removal raises it's head then you can take it back.

I'd still say go for it - you could actually have a lot more come back than many of us buying privately.

If it was the missus having a Rover delivered & it encountered the same problems, what would your advice be to her ?

Your surrounded by Cerb lovers on here, and even they sound sceptical ?

Hi Stevo, sorry to hear about your problems - we met a couple of weeks ago you purchased my 17" RL's.

Difficult to say with this one really, when the clutch went on mine in the first two weeks, and then it needed a new battery and then a new starter motor, oh and the cigarette lighter fell out and took me 3 hours to put back in - I knew just how you were feeling.

I then discovered Ian's at Middlewich - who had a good look at the car whilst servicing it and since then has restored my faith in cerbies - since then no real issues to moan about (touch wood !!).

But after all that I now have a sorted Cerby and I know from Ian's opinion that it appears to be a good 'un, if you can bear it once it comes back ask the dealer if you take it over there and see what Ian thinks about it. If all seems o.k. then put it down to Cerby ownership in the first couple of weeks, provided your warranty is tight I'd say go with the flow.

On the other hand as 'Topol' would say - I hear nothing but good praise of James Agger and so if one takes your fancy there, then it may be a case of out with old and in with the new !

Let us know how you get on - and hopefully carry on with your dream of a Cerbie !

thanks for the replies guys. the last i heard the ecu was being replaced with a new one. hopefully i should have the car by the end of next week. whoa - been trying to contact you all week just to ask your advice on the above, thank for the reply - im sure the car will be worth the wait. just on some of the replies above, i think its really easy to say to someone to walk away from a car. it isnt as easy as said though when you set your heart on something you really want. ill probably live to regret getting it but if i dont ill never know. i might go and buy another car and all the above could happen after the warranty has run out, at least now most of the work thats been done shouldnt need to be done again in the forseeable future.............hopefully.
