I believe that if you get caught with one the French police smash them up.

That goes for all detection devices. They may confiscate your car for a bit as well, and they seem to be quite keen on big fines.

On a related topic, there's a guy on SELOC who got a EUR750 fine at the side of the road which he paid there and then. 6 months later they wrote to him and told him that was an interim payment, his case had been heard and he now owed another EUR750. He has to pay it or basically never go to France again, which can be a bit of a problem when your boss says "Guess what, this years conference is in Nice"

You need to be bloody sure there's no one around if you're going to speed in France around Le Mans weekend.

However sat nav systems which show the locations of speed - sorry, safety cameras are not at risk, even in France apparently.

Just got the latest issue of EVO through the letterbox, their editorial column this month is warning about speeding in France, they say that being caught doing >40kmh over the limit (so, 105+mph) means an instant 15-day ban. They had to leave their AMG Merc CLS in the Gendarmerie car park until they could send someone else to pick it up.

apparently the law in france for a laser/radar detector is max 30k euro's.

but yes usually they just stand on them when you get pulled (so I hear)

i dont think that was the question though, this guy means a laser diffuser, no?

one that actually scrambles the signal.

If they like detectors enough to crush them under their boots, they're going to like jammers a lot less and possibly go looking for someting else to crush - better guard your plums.....

I think you stand a better chance by not doing anything silly.

Eyes are one thing, but these guys were stood in deep drainage ditches last year. You were right on top of them before you saw them.

On the way back up to the ferry they had a helicopter up, but it was on the other side of a steep hill, so as you came over the peak, it was actually below you.

The general message from last year was leave them at home unless you have a very deep wallet. The police are very hot around this weekend. Speed at your own risk, and if you are intent on speeding make sure you have plenty of cash on you and a second driver for your car!!

Just to add to what has already been said, The g'darmes will actively seek out anyone who has a scamera detector of any type.Bike cops will ride alongside queuing traffic and pull over any cars with anything that looks like a detector. Poor bloke got stopped last year and lost his all singing road angel and had his car impounded until he had been to a cash machine and paid a 500e fine.(He did seem a little bitter)No good argueing they run over them. I got pulled because i had the empty cage on my dash for my geodesy unit. He kept asking where the unit was? (prehaps he had been told that the English are stupid). Eventually, as i wasnt about to show him he let us go but i was getting worried that he was going to search the car. So make sure you hide them away or leave at home.
Apart from that the french all seem really friendly
