Just a quick cautionary tale and an easy fix for anyone with a similar problem.

I was in the process of filling up the tank when the bloke next to me said "oi theres petrol comming out of your car !!". Sure enough petrol was dripping onto the floor (probably about half a cup full judging by the size of the puddle), It was difficult to tell where it was coming from but I could see that it was worying close the hot exhaust. I stoped the fill at half a tank and drove the last 50 miles home with crossed fingers and a glum expression - new tanks being about £300.

Thinking back I'd noticed a patch of "wet" under the car on filling probably since I had my S2 body lift and outrigger work done. A little detective work done by pooring petrol down the filler pipe tracked the leak down to the rubber connecting sleeve/ jubilee clips where the pipe joins to the tank. The rubber was slightly perished and there was corrosion and deposits on the outside of the metal pipe preventing a good seal. A bit of gentle sanding and a pair of new jubilee clips and the whole thing is as good as new.

Car back on the road and the wallet worse off by ... £0.98 for the clips.

.

I know some people have boot "petrol smells" and this may be a potential cause and for once pretty easy to sort and much better than a Cape Canavral style ignition
