Lights, camera...no action?

The headlights have decided to have a life of their own and wondered if the knowledgeable amongst you can point me in the right direction.
Turn the dipped beam on, no problem. Flick the full beam on no problem. About every 5th or 6th time I push the button to go back to dipped beam again, the dipped beam either goes off for a second or so (although it feels like about a minute in the dark) then comes back on, but sometimes the dipped beam goes off completely for at least 5 seconds, at which point I loose my nerve and either turn the lights off and on again or simply push the full beam button and it all starts working again.
The steering wheel button works everytime so I dont think its the ribbon cable. I havent (yet) unplugged the black box in the boot, but I will do. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it might be and how it can be fixed?

Most likely the contacts in the light control box (above the tank in the boot) are getting hot and are burning / have burnt out. If you're about over the weekend, I can give you a hand fixing it. I've just sorted my headlights out having had the same problem.

Steve, E3D, had a poke about this morning. There is indeed some blackening/scorch marks on the box and some of the wires 'north' of the connector. I noticed that one of the wires has actually frayed/burnt and I have some exposed wires. This is all a bit more than my technical knowhow of pulling the wires out, cleaning them and sticking them back in. Im assuming I need to cut out the exposed wiring and somehow re-fit the connector, but there's no way Im going to start doing anything like that, especially mear the petrol tank. I'll end up with a glob of molten plastic in my garage where the cerb once stood. I am assuming it wont be one of those wallet wilting fixes?
I did this same fix a couple of months ago. I removed the control unit and opened it up. Cut the existing 'burnt out' pin and soldered a new wire to the pin, and wire exits the side of the multiplug.
Crimp a bullet connector onto this new short wire and the opposite bullet on the original car wiring, after cutting it from the multiplug.
This is how mines gonna stay, cos it works,

Mark, Im sure you've seen me post about my mechanical ineptitude? Well, my auto electrics are even worse! I kinda see what you are saying but even if I knew how to, I dont possess a soldering iron (would a length of plastic, say a BIC biro, and a cheap lighter from the corner shop do the same thing?
). I just have to wait for a certain Surrey TVRCC RO to take pity on me and fix it
