Any idea how they work?
They sit refreshing the auction page in the background.
From each request to read the page they extract the winning bidder, the winning bid value and the time remaining.
When the conditions are met on bid value they watch until the time gets to a point which means your bid will be the last one and bid for you.
Another option would be to use the ebay RSS feeds and sit there watching a load of auctions at once.
I use AuctionStealer.
Register (free) with an email address only (no address, credit card etc)
Ignore offer to upgrade unless you want better than "the final 10 seconds"
Set up a snipe, it'll ask for the ebay number (top right hand corner of the auction). It'll go off and check and come back telling what it thinks you are sniping. Confirm, add your max bid and then wait.
You'll get an email confirming the new auction snipe having been set up.
You'll also get outbid notices if the amount should go above your limit before the snipe.
And an email with the result of the snipe.
Not failed to win a snipe where I haven't been out-bid during the normal time of the auction - which is fine because that means it's gone above what is the most I'd pay anyway.

Edit: Just checked - yep, free. Once registered and logged-in, on left hand side is "Auctions"... it's here that you enter the auction number.

Bidding directly pushes the price up. If you waited then the price theoretically stays lower.
Huh? If the price is currently £1, with 50p increments (I'm not sure how eBay decides what the increment is) and you bid £25, it places a bid of £1.50 on your behalf, and goes on to automatically outbid anyone who places a bid, up to £25.50, when you lose. If there are no further bids after your initial £25 one, you pay £1.50, not £25.
I still don't see what you gain by sniping over just using eBays automatic bidding.

it means the price is not pushed til the last minute and other bidders are not aware of your interest .... increases chance of winning and with a lower price..
They aren't aware, anyway. All that happens is that when you place a bid, you get an almost instantaneous outbid, so sniping wouldn't gain you anything.
Sorry, but I still don't see the point.

Ebay doesn't show what your maximum bid is. Only the amount required to outbid the current maximum by one increment. The only person who knows what your maximum bid is, is you.
Yes, but if the other bidder sees you bidding £10.50, the likelihood is that they will bid £11.00, thus depriving you of a pound as you end up bidding £11.50. Simple way to remember is that Auction Sniper et al work for you, not the seller, nor any other poor sod who might have wanted the item. They are there to sneak a last minute bid in, under the radar, so no-one else has a chance to react. They aren't fair.
Managed to get a ticket for Houx Annexe this way, after contacting the seller direct to see if he'd do a Buy It Now for slightly more than I ended up paying. He couldnt, so one snipe later...
