Last night I was hungry and just could not be arsed going to the shops to buy some food or get a takeaway. Therefore I went rooting around in the darkest bowels of my kitchen cupboard and found a can of chilli con carne which I know for a fact must be about 3 years old (bought it whilst in previous house). The best before date was August 2003. I thought about it for a couple of minutes, cracked it open and scoffed it with some rice. How long have I got Doc? Tell me straight!
In our house we have the Fridge Police, aka my stepdaughter.
For years, through studenthood and batchelorhood, food in my cupboards and fridge was for eating, unhampered by mere details like 'best before' or 'sell by' dates.
The Fridge Police have changed all that. A tin of tuna, sitting in a cupboard quite happily, can apparently now become a festering poisonous hazard to be thrown out in the microsecond it passes the date stamped on the tin. A 'ready meal' or salad, which was sitting happily in the fridge yesterday has mysteriously disappeared the next day, even though I was going to eat it - not because of the quality of the food, but because of some tiny text printed on the outside of the package to keep lawyers at bay.
I think I'll found the ABD - Association of British Diners - and campaign against such arbitrary limits on food. After all, safety is not down to a number on a package.

Thankfully I don't have them yet but my girlfriend has them in spades.

As far as I am concerned if it doesn't look moldy or smell worse than it's supposed to then it gets eaten. Especially tinned stuff - as has already been said the writings to satisfy the lawyers.
I normally buy some bottled "christmas" beer which is bottle conditioned. It specifially says on the label that the sell by date is for legal reasons and the beer is suitable for drinking upto atleast 2 years after this date.
Anybody want some Combat rations from 1983?
Ive already scoffed the choclate...its loverly!
So long as its hermetically sealed, and it was heat treated before canning, itd probably last indefinetely.
Saw a proggy a while back, Ray Mears( that survival geeza) he tried a can of corned beef that was packed for the vietnam war at the start of it, and it was as good as if it was packed yesterday.

Corned beef tastes likes sh1t so how would you know if it had gone off???

Found a packet of M&M's on the kitchen work top the other day.
Thought,they look interesting,and ate the lot(not really an M&M's type i usually prefer Mars bars).
Left the empty wrapper on the living room table.
Fiance' comes home,sees wrapper, and looks horrified.
"Have you ate THEM ! ? !"
"Yes,why ?"
"Found them at the bottom of an old hand bag last week"
"Are they out of date or something ?"
"Not sure"(quick exit).
Looked at the wrapper - expired mid '98.
.

BTW - tasted allright though - a bit like anchovies.

I regularly eat stuff that has expired it's sell by date. Usually yoghurts. If it smells OK then no problem. Only thing is I haven't got a sense of smell. 
Does me no harm either - never had food poisoning. I went to Tunisia about 15 years ago and they were stretchering people out of the hotel with dysentery. Me? Never even had a twinge.
