idle odd after long run!

Twice in the past week I have had a run of say 25 mins along the motorway. Both journeys then consisted of 5 mins through slower traffic and the idleing seems to go loopy, it will drop to 600 revs then occasionally pop back up to 950, then 1250 then back to 600 and this will carry on for a while.
This doesn't happen on the start of the journey, it usually idles around 950 quite constantly. Seems perhaps it's just when it warms up more.
Any ideas??

There was something in SPRINT this month about a little gizmo that gets dirty and gives the exact symptoms you are talking about. Apparently takes about an hour to locate clean and replace. Trouble is can't remember what car it was on. DOH!

Think you mean the stepper motor but that's on the Rover V8, not the AJP...

Has been ok to London and back this weekend. Well almost until the exhaust note changed on the way back, pulled over to find flames from the heatshield by the cats!!
AA towed me back and there it will stay until I get this checked out!

Okay, I think I can say what's happened....
you've got a knackered plug, and due to that you are pumping unburn fuel down the exhaust, it reaches the cats and the vapour is restricted by the honeycomb in the cats and eventually, when it gets hot enough the vapour ignites within the cat causing the cat to heat up to such an extent that it melts the glue on the backing of the heat shielding and the residual oil and hey presto a small fire! I know because it happened to me twice!
So, pull the plugs and see what state they're in, that should be your first task.
The noise you describe sounds like a miss fire to me.

Bad luck. The plugs were new three weeks before you got the car. There is something odd going on with the car now, she never gave me any sort of trouble (Well not as serious as this).
I would check the HT leads, make sure you haven't disturbed any of them during the alternator change, also check the leads going to the coild packs.

To be honest I would get it on the laptop and see the error codes, this may give you an idea of whats going on.
It can get confusing - plugging in teh laptop.
Best bet is to check HT leads first, then if you are sure that they are okay then pull the plugs, if, like me, you have fouled plugs then that will be obvious, if it's a knackered/broken plug lead then you should find a very wet plug, swap HT leads to confirm.
It's just that your symptons are EXACTLY the same as mine were, even down to the distance travelled before the cats caught fire!
