.....................without deleting the file??

OK firstly DUH from me OK, yes brain fade etc etc however my old machine has a 7 gig HD (stop sniggering at the back!!) and has been found to have 740m free only with 2.9 gig on the above file.
So good bet would be to bin the crap from this file alone would free almost 50% of HD capacity but HOW I've lost the plot and need some help here really don't fancy trying to highlight file contents and then hit delete (tried it doesn't work) believe me I WOULD do an allnighter to clear this lot out that way if it worked.

Somebody help pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

MoJo.

Copy an identically named file of zero size over the top of it?

Why doesn't it work, what happens when you just delete the file?

Have you tried shift+delete (i.e. delete rather than move to recycle bin)?

Edit: um, which file exactly are you talking about? You can't delete files that are actively being used, and shouldn't delete system files, but there may be other ways to clear the data out and free space.

Or you can access it from Control Panel as well.

Nope, ccleaner can't get to it either, looks like a long manual delete ahead.

windows internet log, activated 2002, some protected files but a lot that can be removed manually (think this is why the utilities fail)

Do you have a full file name for that file?

Generally, protected files are not something that you want to remove manually.
