Anyone know anything about these engines (apart from being a bit rubbish)? It's the one in SWMBO's '96 CRV, and it sounds very tappety to me. Do they have hydraulic tappets, or can they be adjusted? Is it just a "Honda thing"?

Google didn't turn anything up for me, expect that:
(a) their low compression ratio means they can be turbo'd fairly easily
(b) sticking a decent VTEC head on them yields about 200 ponies
Hmm....

I think all VTEC engines have rockers, not hydraulic tappets. Sounding tappety is a Honda trait, certainly on the B-series, but if it's overly tappety (esp if high mileage or more than a few years old) it might be worth having a gander.

B-series as a whole is fairly tuneable, but don't know if yours will need a new head (wrecked Prelude 2.0 should provide if so), or if you can just transplant in hotter cams and a new ECU (oh - and then fit a thinner head gasket - IIRC there's at least 3 different H-G thicknesses on the B18 - easy way to adjust compression ratio a bit).

Best source for info will be the Honda-R forum, there's a fair few good people on there, but some wide-boys as well so get a balanced picture.
