Decided to take the 996 C4s out of garage today, and spotted a big pool of green liquid under the car.
Thinking along the lines of coolant.
Any ideas about possible problems etc.

Whereabouts? engine end or bonnet end. If former then quite likely to be a split reservoir, a common problem. If latter then it could be damaged seal/o rings leading into radiators.

Have you checked the level in the reservoir? Is it low? Does light come on the dash? If there's a leak then light should be showing on dash as it's very sensitive to just a small underfilling.

Either a leak in the expansion tank or a hose.

Keep it topped up and you should be ok until you can get it repaired.

Porsche coolant is pink, a bit like the colour of cherryade and it tends to go a little orange once it's been in the system a while so unless it's been filled with non official coolant it's not the cooling system that's leaking.

The only other thing I can suggest is a leak from the washer resevoir.

OK.
Pool comes from back end.
No light on dash, but reservoir looks empty.
Ran the car for about 10 minutes, and still no light on dash. Erred on side of caution, switched off, and called RAC.
Have on OPC warranty, but funnily enough, no contact details for Porsche Assistance. Of course, I am assuming that an OPC warranty entitles me to Porsche Assist, Am I mistaken.

If broken reservoir, how long will that take to fix ?

About £250, it's not covered by the warranty, surprise, surprise.

I occasionally use Halfords screenwash (when I run out of the Dr. Lack Porsche stuff) this stuff is a fluorescent green that's very visible even in low dilution. Could it be this?

I knew some "Air" head would raise the air-cooled card. Have to admit right now that I am starting to think that I should have held on to the 993.

Will have to rely on Porsche to fix this in one day, as I am taking it out of the country on Wednesday.

Anybody want to run a book on when Porsche actually manage to fix it ?

Have spotted that the leak is somewhere halfway down the car, so not too sure if leak is reservoir.
Probably some pipe in the middle of the car, HOPEFULLY !!!!!

Aircon gas is dyed with a bright (and I mean bright) fluorescent green colour. My coolant, with Porsche anti-freeze, is paler green.

A common problem is the coolant header tank splitting which I had repaired under warranty on my old C4. The only think that could be described as wear and tear on your cooling system is the water pump.

Unless you have hit something and sustained damage I would suggest you protest loudly and firmly if you get dealt the 'not covered, sir' card.....

If the leak is midway then that looks like a pipework issue, as the coolant runs through them to the rads at the front of the car.

why is everyone automatically thinking coolant here ? - Power Steering Fluid is Green(ish), Transmission Fluid is Green(ish) too ! If it's a C4, then you have two possible leak points, Power Steering fluid runs the length of the car. What colour green is it - and is is 'oil consistency' ? Another factor is that unless your garage floor is sealed, water will soak straight into the concrete, oil will not ...

THanks for all the advice and comments.
Nice man from RAC came out, and his diagnosis is coolant, probably due to coolant reservoir being drier than a camels nether regions.
Strangely, no warning light on dash, but I assume that would have come on when car warmed up. Didn't give it the chance to do that, so currently parked up, and waiting for Porsche Assist (Thanks for the telephone number) to flat bed away on Tuesday morning.
Now I have to see if they can fix and return to me on Tuesday, but have to wait until Tuesday morning for that little discussion.

In a bit of a bind, as could almost definitely get a local independent to fix it on Tuesday, but Porsche Assist have informed me in no uncertain terms that such a line of action would invalidate warranty.

Obviously their position regarding conditions of the warranty will bring a responsibility to fix the problems under said warranty, so their intransigence will be returned in spades when it comes to the discussions regarding said work being covered under the warranty.

Split coolant tanks on 996's is a very common fault. Not too hard to get to and IIRC mine was about £150 replaced including parts and labour at my local indie.

You could probably cancel the porsche assist and top it up with distilled water to get her to the indie. They'll be able to pressure test it and confirm where the leak is coming from for a fraction of the price.

Not so sure about the coolant tank - if the tank has split then it will drip onto the left exhaust (looking from the back of the car) - if the leak is not directly under the engine/exhaust in this area, then it's not this. I've replaced my tank myself so have some experience here. My guess is the main coolant hoses going to the front rads, or the other smaller coolant hoses going to the heater matrix. Whatever it is, lets hope the warranty covers it ..!

All the best, Richard.

I'm a bit mystified by this green coolant. I recently had a stone through my middle rad and bought a 20 litre container from the OPC in Tonbridge and it's as pink as a pink thing.

Did Porsche change the colour to pink recently or are there 2 official coolants in different colours?

To add a little mystery to my "green puddle" it would appear that this puddle was created by me starting the car. It has been tucked up in the garage for the last 2 weeks. As most of it has seeped into the concrete floor over the last few hours, I can only assume that starting the car caused some failure. My suspicion is one of the hoses leading from the front to the back, and in all honesty thank my lucky stars that this happened in my garage rather than hammering up the M40. I can only assume from the amount of liquid that I had a total failure in something, and since it is not from the rear, my assumption is a hose.

Either way, I just hope that the Porsche Service Gods are smiling on me when Porsche West London get it on Tuesday morning, as I am booked on a ferry for Wednesday noon.

Here's hoping !!!

All this brings a quick question to mind .. would be obliged if anyone has an answer ... If Porsche assist is called , the flat bed is used and a loaner car is supplied , and it's subsequently decided by Porsche that the item is not covered under warranty , is the driver then handed a bill for the assist / loaner ??

No, you made the right choice.
If it had been a 993, the floor would instead have been covered with a pool of air, which of course is much more difficult to notice than green liquid.
