Any reason the Saph Cosworth front brake setup won't bolt onto the Chimp? Don't have my brake book handy to check.
Can't see much point going larger than 280mm discs as they should be plenty on a one tonne car also the 24MM wide SC discs give a nice option of cheaply available 4 pots in the future if I required more.
Best Regards
Matt

No reason at all. Just needs two things.... Firstly the mounting bolts are bigger therefore you need to drill the hub out to 1/2 inch from the 10mm it will be at present...Secondly a spacer/washer to clear the disc from the caliper mounting will be required of about 2mm..... It is obvious where it goes when you mount it up.
I have 278mm discs and the single pot calipers from Granada scorpio cosy and they are tons better than the originals.... All in all a good cheap upgrade and they look better through 17" aloys as well

Couls somone enlighten me and explai(in laymans terms)how you go about doing this, what i need etc?Apart from the obvious new discs,i take it you need a spacer to put the caliper further out from centre,to clear the increased disc dia?And where does this larger dia hole for the mounting bolts come into it?

The only modification with the ones i fit was the main caliper mounting bracket to the hub. The bolts supplied for the fixing of this were m12 from the original m10... The bolts go through the hub from the inside and screw into the caliper mounting bracket. Therefore to allow the new m12 bolts to fit fit throught the hub and into the bracket the holes in the hub needed to be enlarged with a 1/2 inch drill, very simple and very straight forward. The spacer was in the form of two washers. When the bolts have been passed through the hub, the washer then goes on before it screws into the threads in the caliper.. You should already have the disc on at this stage so you will see that the caliper needs spacing out by approx 2mm to clear the disc and mounting. When you get your brake upgrade it may be different but post again and i or some one will help..... It will be obvious once you start to look.... Hope this helps. Regards Steve.
I think the penny is slowly starting to drop now
,at last!I think my confusion is in the caliper itself.Presumably, because i will use my existing caliper,i dont need to re-drill anything out to a larger size,i just need to space the caliper out further to clear the disc?My original discs are 260mm,and i dont know how much clearance there is at present, but i would think that i will need more than an extra 2mm to clear what is an extra 11.5mm radius of the disk?
Has anybody fitted the 283 disks with the std 500 calipers?

Mongoose. On the brakes i fitted the problem was the offset. The disc didnt sit as far inset onto the hub therefore the carrier needed spacing outwardly for the depth. You may need to move the caliper forward to allow the extra diameter. Not sure but i think there was a thread about modified mounting brackets on here not so long ago.??
Regards. Steve........... P.S. For normal fast road use i have found the upgrade damn good

I think you've misunderstood where the spacer is going? The 2mm spacing is to move the caliper mounting bracket side to side relative to the car and the disc face not away from the hub centre. On my Griff with std brakes there is a 4.8 mm spacer washer.
Its my guess that the caliper mounting bracket for the Granny/Scorpio Cosworth 283mm set up is similar to the std Griff 500 but mounts the caliper further out from the hub centre to acomodate the 283mm disc, in which case it is just possible that the std 500 caliper will mount to this bracket? Looks like a trawl round to find a breakers with a Granny/Scorpio Cosworth - a rare thing?
MisterT said:I see now,the 2mm spacer is to compensate for the offset of the disk.I was really hoping it wouldn't be too dificult to just reposition the original caliper, rather than having to trawl the breakers. This is where it 's all going a bit 'Pete Tong' for me.The disk i can get easily, and know what to get,i just need the correct spacers to reposition the original calipers i feel.Someone out there might sell them i guess

MisterT said:This is what ive been thinking! To buy good quality disks for these cars(ford)from a motorfactor costs so little, and if only you could just move the caliper it would be so easy
it has the makings of such a high benefit/low cost improvement.
MisterT said:I dont have a specific disc in mind, why not use the ones you have with a spacer? The std 500 disc size on my griff is 260mm dia,24 mm thick and most importantly 58mm total thickness(this is where the offset comes from obviously). The hub diameter is 146mm i believe.
What is the disc spec you have?

Which model year Granada Scorpio did you take them from. I have checked Ford brake catalogues and can only find a 278mm disc for this car?
ETA: I've just found the spec for the Sapphire Cosworth that Matt who started this thread referred to and it has a 283mm disc, Ive just requested a drawing from a disc manufacturer to see how it measures up, will report back....

Mr T.... Sorry
Just check purchase reciept and noticed the discs i fitted were indeed 278mm...!!!! Sorry everbody if the mistake has led to confusion.. Anyway everything else is as i have said before... The calipers are single piston affairs and have a lot bigger pad than the standard Chim.. Well spotted Mr T and thanks for bringing it to our attention

I have just got some measurements of the Sapphire Cosworth 283mm discs
The overall thickness is 55mm,so i guess it would need a 3mm spacer behind it as the std 500 disc overall is 58mm.Other than this, the thickness is the same(24mm) and obviously the stud pattern is the same. One other slight thing though,is that the centre hole at the front of the disc(hub nut),is 63mm on this disc, whereas it is 64mm on the original 500 disc-not really difficult to get around though!
So overall it looks like using these discs with a 3mm spacer would be fine, but obviously you need to move the caliper out another 11.5mm,so is it as easy as getting some spacers made to do this then?
My source by the way is a Lucas catalogue.Part no. for the 283mm disc is DF2630,and the std 500 disc part no. is DF1655 i believe.

I've just had a detailed technical drawing sent thro from QH for the 283mm Sapph Cos disc. The difference between the std 260mm TVR disc and the 283mm disc is about 3.25mm from hub mounting face to centreline of the disc, this should be possible to adjust using thinner spacer washers to mount the caliper bracket.
The swept face of the disc is approx 10 to 11mm wider diametrically (this corresponds with the extra diameter of the disc). If the std 260mm TVR caliper does fit the mounting bracket from a Sapph Cos there will be a track of 10 to 11mm on the inside diameter of the disc face which is unswept by the pad. I think therefore the Sapph Cos caliper and pad will also be required along with the Sapph Cos Caliper mounting bracket.
The centre bore is 63.6mm for both discs so there isnt a problem fitting to the hub spigot.
The discs are not the difficult bit to source, my guess is that the Sapphire Cosworth brake components will be really hard to come by?

Just upgraded mine to 4 pot Hispec 280mm, am very pleased.
IMO I think they look good too.

I bought some large discs for my 97 Chim from some place advertising in the Sprint mag (have the invoise somewhere), They came with some brackets to move the standard caliper back to miss the disc, I didn't use the brackets as I fitted Cossy calipers I got off ebay. I am in germany at the moment but when I get back to the UK I will take a photo of the brackets and post it on here.
quote=trackcar]I've got some cosworth sierra calipers i bought for my S .. they std brakes with decent pads are so good though that i've never thuoght of fitting the 4 pots. will probably ebay them at some point. only downside is someone's painted them purple
