would this induce more turbo lag on an MR2 though? intake pipe length must be longer

I've seen intercoolers mounted in the boot on MRT drag cars, but I've never seen an external one like that....

Well... Longer pipes certainly can pile on the lag. Imho the pipes are longer, but not hugely so. As long as the flow dynamic of moving air isn't restricted by anything I can't see it making much real-world difference.
The positioning of the the i/c unit(whilst not necessarily asthetically beautiful ) would seem ideal for cooling the internal charge temp.- and after all that is what it's being paid to do

...and if its a drag car, i bet it runs anti-lag anyway.

nope, not a drag car a gravel hillclimb / rally car. No idea if it runs anti-lag or not as I didnt get the chance to chat to the owner.

edit: more pics from the same event are here: www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=265618&f=123&h=0

Fact is lag wont be a prob i dont think cos he'll be on throttle for most of the run.

Bit similar to the S1 quattro with the oil cooler on the tail and the rads in the boot.

Seen a few jap tuners running them like that on Tsukuba and Ebisu, bit weird but it seems to work for them.

Turned out it wasnt attached as well as he thought, on the second day it had a bit more support:

so it may have even been providing some downforce as well!

Hmmmmm, surely the angle it is mounted at encourages air to pass across is rather than through it - ie. less cooling effect. Also, it is directly in line with the warm air exiting from the engine bay. According to my limited knowledge of aerodynamics, I believe the area between the butresses will have low air pressure, so not necessarily good for forcing through a radiator?

I'm probably missing something here, anybody know if it does actualy work?

What you have said is mostly true but it still may be marginally better than having it in the engine bay as it is on the standard car.

The lid from the NA is metal, whilst the turbo lid is fibreglass and loads lighter....

I wonder why he's using the heavier item?

Looks like he's taken inspiration from Noble (although noble's isn't external, but if you saw one you would see what I'm on about)

The IC on the Noble is aweful for lack of air flow and heatsoak so he could've chosen better!
