Coming up the A68 past Tow Law, trying to overtake a mobile roadblock, the throttle cable snapped, leaving me to coast gently to a stop.
I called the AA and within 40 minutes was mobile again! Absolutely superb!
However, I've been told that I should really get the cable replaced as the fix was only temporary. Roll on the weekend then!

You've missed the best bit, using the remains of the cable as a hand throttle whilst driving thro' town. At least up on Tow Law there are only the sheep to hit!!

Having had the same problem myself, I now carry an electrical connector, the one with two screws. stick your cable in each end and screw it up tight. It's generally ok to get you home.
If you want to be clever you can wrap the cable round and then feed back in and tighten, that way as you put you foot down it's actually pulling on it's self and tightening. All depends on the amount of slack you've got.
Doesn't stop it being one of the most embarrasing mishaps though. Always when you're showing off !!!

There are some common problems that can cause this which are worth checking. The main ones are misalignment of the cable where it passes through the bulkhead, or the pedal being adjusted up too high forcing the cable to kink where it attaches to the pedal. If your car is underpowered you might find it helps to fit a throttle stop too.
If you still have the old cable you can trim 6" or so off the outer to expose enough inner to form a permanent repair using a screw-on cable nipple.
If you do hit this problem again, you can drive home by putting any convenient stone under the throttle stop to raise the idle speed to 2500 rpm or so, and then drive home on a fixed throttle.
