Spider 18'' Alloys for Chim?
Discussion
Hi,
I have looked through past threads which were very helpful.. thanks jsr especially!
I had the privilege of driving a Tuscan Speed 6 a few months ago which was absolutely amazing.. however unfortunatley with the V6 engine, it doesnt have the beautiful V8 hummmmmmm. So ive decided to keep the Chim for this summer at least but I DESPERATELY want those 18'' Spider Alloys but they only come in the 5 bolts not 4..unless I have a conversion (which is quite costly).. my Tyres are bald and it failed its MOT due to this reason...so does any body know a where I can get replica Spiders from OR any site or advice where I can get some decent Alloys for the Chim as this is proving to be a NIGHTMARE!!! Aghhhhh! I spen the whole of the day looking to no avail....
Cheers J

Cheers.. the Razors look great.. however they only go up to 17''.. and from the past threads the consensus was 18'' on the rear 17'' on the front??
Have you seen these before? ..I need to call tomorrow and see if they go up to 18'' ... maybe 17'' on all 4 will suffice? What you think?

or (and could I get your honest opinion here lads ...or lasses)

I guess you mean my '18inch wheels' thread i started - lots of helpful information there.
www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=165710&f=8&h=0&hw=18+wheels
I didn't get a set of wheels in the end, mainly cos my insurers wanted a stupid amount of money if i was to fit them. I have since changed insurance companies and they don't have problems with wheels, so i've started looking again. It is hard work trying to find wheels - not only have you got to find a style that suits the car, but you also need to be sure the wheels are available in the correct sizes.
I'm looking to get these in the next few months - Kahn RS-S, 17x7.5 front, 18x7.5 rear (maybe 18x8). Just need to check what offsets are available. I think they look great!

Don't you guys think this is a bit maxpower? 18" wheels look great but the ride must be awful compared to 16"s or 17"s. There's so much comment on here telling of problems with tramlining, poor handling on rough roads and compromised feedback in the corners.
Each to his own but I just can't understand why you would compromise the drivability of such a wonderful drivers car for the sake of good looks.

Not nescerceraly,(xcuse da spelling)
I can only speak from experience and the suspension was slightly modified
,however I never had any tramlining, and the handling was sublime, fronts were 17's(x8"
though 235x40,rears 18x9's 265x35(maybe the 265's helped with a higher sidewall?) >> Edited by v8sag on Wednesday 3rd May 09:26

Not at all - almost all modern cars have big wheels. The chimaera looks dated on it's small 15/16" wheels - why not freshen it up a little. As for the ride, some have said the ride isn't affected, some say it is. With adjustable suspension, i'm sure a good setup can be found.
I intend to keep the same overall height and width as the original wheels, so tramlining shouldn't be an issue.
I quite like these!

Thanks for all your advice.. Ive got my heart set on some wheels now: Kahn RS-V www.kahnwheels.com/ ...however slight problem they only have:
Front: 7x17'' ET 21 (which size Toyo's should I get??)
the real issue....
Rear: 7.5x 18 ET 18 (Might sit out too much??) but are willing to shave the back of the wheel to fit ET 25 (what are your thoughts??)
OR
Rear: 7.5x 18 ET 42 (ie sit well in but willing to use Spacers.. thoguhts on this will also be appreciated?) Again which size Toyos would you guys recommend??
This is harder than I thought it was gong to be ....huh!

If you're confused then ask yourself. Are you wanting 18"s because they look good or because you want better drivability. If it's for looks then just accept that your drivability may well be worse. If it's for drivability IMO you're kidding yourself.
The conversion on mine was about £1,700 as I recall. I don't think that route is available anymore. There is a guy from Holland selling a home made 5 bolt conversion using some reclaimed parts. See this add

Yeah your right... I just got back from LA after being there 6 months .. and I couldnt stop talking UP the Chim to the yanks.. then when I got back I was like hmmmm its perfect except for the small Alloys (the yank mentality of bigger in everything finally got to me..doh!)
So it looks like im going to take the risk go for this look:

scroll down to the 2nd Cerbera from the bottom: 1998 TVR CERBERA 4.2 2+2 2dr Coupe with the Kahn Wheels...
....fingers crossed I dont get tramlined into a brick wall

The Chimaera design is pushing 15 years old now and so it is obviously an old design and I don't think that putting big wheels on it makes it look contemporary any more than putting your mam in a pair of red stilletos makes her look like your sister. Allow your steed a bit of dignity - big wheels is for da dealers...dats de troof.
16/17 inch if you must but 18 is too big.

horses for courses, but i see nothing wrong with a little bit of updating. i like the kahns and i think suit the lines of the car really well.the most important thing is that the owner likes them.
one thing that does suprise me though is when people refer to the car as a classic. dont get me wrong, the design of the car still looks good and i love my chim...but classic it is not. check out autotrader, there are hundreds of chims for sale and very affordable too. its hardly a lancia stratos.
jazman, i would play it safe and stick to 17s all round.
