So I've had a new screen fitted to my 993.

And I'd been warned by by opc as well as on this forum that it's a tricky job and needs to be done by a competent fitter or you get a squeeking screen.

So I sought confirmation that the fitter was experienced and had done the job before.

And guess what? The new screen squeeks like hell and it's bloody annoying. It creaked a little before, very occasionally. But now it's constantly squeeking on anything but the smoothest tarmac.

Anybody know exactly where the squeek comes from and what the remedy might be?

Obviously I've contacted the fitter who, to be fair, has agreed to come back. But I'd quite like to give him some exact instructions on what is required.

Buy some PEDROS ICE WAX from ebay - you can also buy a 'rope', it's a 996 part that will reduce it further. I found Pedros done the trick for me.

Interesting.

We all seem to have the same problem.

But what I can't tell is if it's the screen against the inside trim, the inside trim against the dash or the screen against the outside rubber, or none of the above, that's causing the squeek.

Where do you put the ice wax stuff? And can you put it on after the screen has been fitted?

it's the outside seal rubbing on the bodywork. You can buy some clear sticky insulating tape from Porsche that goes on under the rubber seal. All you do is take the seal off and apply the tape and than put the seal back on. Job takes about a half an hour

mines not squeaking i dont think, more of a slight rattle, mabe it is a slight rattly squeak but it seems to go away after its been driven for a while . . . . . . . . . . .

specialist said it is the heater or somthing, said it happens alot when the windscreen is replaced incorrectly.

I Had this problem. I squirted some silicone grease round the outside rubber strip and it cured it. Did this about 6 months ago and its still good.

Mine did this when I got it. Just buy some telfon tape, take up the outside part of the windscreen seal and stick it between the seal and the window frame. Did the trick for me.

Not everyone, touch wood!

My 993C4S had its windscreen replaced at Bristol OPC a little while back. Perfect job and no squeaks. Now admittedly it didn't squeak before either and it was replaced as it was delaminating in a bottom corner, but there you go...

Mine's being done next week. From the info I've gathered about dos and don'ts the screen needs to go in dead centre. RAC autowindscreens are fitting mine and have allocated 2 experienced fitters to do the job. I've insisted on a genuine Porsche screen ordered from the local OPC. I'm also supplying them with the teflon tape to make sure this one is silent. My current screen squeaks like a b@stard all the time, but it's clear to see it was fitted by a blind limbless YTS monkey. Fingers crossed this time....

Thanks chaps.

I've passed your various pearls of wisdom on to the fitter, and he's coming back to sort it on Friday. So I'm looking forward to a quiet, squeek free weekend.

I had my windscreen replaced by carglass as of a small crack and asked them to take care referring to all your tips. Theiy pointed at one of the fitters who was an expert with Porsches and knew all about it - no worries!
When I picked up the car it was another guy fitting the seal and three weeks after the replacement it started squeeking. I notice that it is worse in the first days after driving in heavy rain.
The car is going back this week for fixing it, and I will remind them of their arrogant response last time. I hope it will be fixed, but I am bit worried they will just replace the whole screen without knowing what the problem was.

You have to be careful which lube you spray under the seal as some will damage the urethane used to bond the screen in.
As yank says, the squeak comes from the outer seal moving on the surrounding bodywork. The teflon tape you get from Porsche needs to be applied to the bodywork right up to the point where the outer seal sits on the bodywork.
I had a nightmare with the new screen in my 993. The first one went in mid May. It went in square to the aperture an had the teflon tape applied, but it not only squeaked badly, it also leaked! After quizing some specialists I found out that the tape must be applied right up to the edge of the outer rubber seal as this is where the noise comes from.
After waiting an age for a new screen and seals to be ordered again, the job was done again last week and with the tape in the right place this time it's absolutely silent.

So I can see why people say replacing a 993 screen is a nightmare. My advice would be to:
Insist on a genuine Porsche screen, with new inner and outer seals.
Get the teflon tape in the right place.
Insist on 2 fitters to do the install, as it makes a huge difference to lining it up correctly and squarely.

I haven't fitted enough of these screens to claim that I know of all the pitfalls and how to avoid them, however, the ones that I have installed have not reported back with squeaking or creaking.

Some cars are known the problems they may have as a result of windscreen replacement; experience and knowledge in the trade also provides the grapevine the reasons why those problems may occur, for example, the Saab 9000 may creak initially (note: similar fitting style to the 993 but not as angled / curved in the aperture). Usually, a creaking may occur as a result of the polyurethane bead being too high when applied; or that the screen has not been installed to the correct height in relation to bead size; or even that the adhesive is an incorrect one which was applied in inappropriate temperature conditions according to the OEM recommendation, or it is simply a poor grade of product which is taking far too long to cure.

Creaking after windscreen replacement suggests there is movement. If there is movement and the screen is directly glazed (bonded) to the aperture, then one of the above will usually apply. Tapes and lube are quick-fix remedies that are not addressing the problem causing the noise.

Best way to reduce windscreen creak is to fit a strut brace
