Clutch on 2000/2001 Forester GT

I've been test driving a few of these - not cos I'm bored, but looking to get one to last a couple of years - and have a query about the clutches on these things.
Most of the cars I'm seeing have lived mainly in the city and have fairly low kms - anywhere from 60,000-120,000 - and the feel of the clutch has been a bit variable. Some are light and fluffy with an indistinguishable biting point whilst others are sharper.
Anyone any experience with these? What should it feel like? And how long do they generally last? Just want to check cos I've been quoted AU$1500-AU$2500 (c.GBP600-GBP1000) for replacement.
