I take it you've already enquired about insurance?

To be brutally honest I'm sure you could get a much better bike in restricted form. The R6 is a belter but I would think restricting it would just make it rubbish... May be wrong!

I'd look for a bike that in restricted form is not too strangled.

Its also going to cost you a fortune to insure!

Before you go any further, get an insurance quote.
I have a sneaky feeling, due to the R6's desirability etc, the price will be astronomical!!!

An earlyish one may not be too bad to ride restricted.. But i dont think that will be the issue here.

Not worth the hassle you get caught and you wont be riding/driving for a few years afterwards , plus with inexperiance you will end up brown bread .

Why get a 170kg bike with 33bhp when you can get a 130kg bike that is designed for 33bhp like this;

Not an expert but wouldn't restricting a bike with peaky delivery numb it to the point of pointlessness?

going for a big bike and restricting has its positives. for one the bike is bigger and therefore more confortable and also you dont need to buy a new bike after 2 years you can simply derestrict. however instead of the R6 have a look at the an old 400. hondas and yams prob best. they are full sized and restrictable and insurance insnt to bad. there performance also isnt too bad with the restricter and you can pick one up for about £1500

cos it's illegal on a restricted licence

there's a power-to-weight clause in the 33bhp regs, it's not to exceed 0.16kW/kg

33bhp is 25kw
25/130 is 0.19kw/kg

cos obviously a lighter bike that can stop and turn more quickly is more dangerous

I approximated the weight. But this article makes my point

i agree with you it's a great little bike, but it's still illegal at 33bhp for a restricted licence rider, it has more than .16kw/kg (i think it's 132kg)

if its a carb model they put restrictors in the carbs, this is what i had on my RVF when i was 17 but in all fairness it was slow and boring to ride and to tell the truth i did pull them out a little before i should have done.

As Yam R1 has already said, if its the older version you're looking at, the restrictions are in the carbs, usually a set of washers that restricted the airflow. And yes, they do have a 'habit' of falling out. (Although, I never went down the restricted license route, I was too old for that when I did my test).

If its a newer fuel injected model, I believe its done on the ECU, but could be wrong.

It won't feel slow (its an R6) by any means, but it won't be in the region of its usual performance and you'll notice a huge difference before and after.

If you haven't phoned about insurance yet I'd suggest the following...

Go to the nearest chemist and ask for a bottle of lubricant, because by the time you've finished trying to insure it you'll have been well and truly shafted!

My advice, if you want a 600 at 17, get something that won't feel so strangled. Honda Hornet, Yamaha Fazer, Suzuki Bandit, all very capable, not quite R6 territory on power and speed, but will serve you incredibly well as a learning bike for when you get your licence. There are also 400s out there that are under the 33bhp limit that many people ride on restricted licences.

Tell you what if i was 8 stone and not 15!!! i would love to run about on one of them. What a great little bike. My first was an RG250 gamma and i loved it.

To comment on the thread, R6 at 17 just passed is quite frankly stupid. You can pick up a very nice bike for under £2k bandit or CB500, CB600, which would be much better in restricted form would be great fun and a good first step onto the ladder. It wont hurt your wallet as much if you drop one of them rather than an R6, even in a car park at 5mph!! You will not get insuracne for an R6 IMO certainly not at a price worth considering i.e. less than £1000.

But maybe your loaded and dont care about the cost, in that case why not go for a R1, GSXR1000 or a nice Ducati 999SP

Found myself searching for RS250 specs last night....then came to my senses with the realisation that a 40 plus y.o. with 13 odd stone of gut & an inability to carry any corner speed wouldn't do the 'prilla (or me) any justice what so ever!

never owned a stroker which is kinda one of life's regrets

Personally i think a bandit may be a bit err sensible for a 17 Y.O
I recon, a GSXR,ZXR,CBR,VFR 400 would be better and a bit 'cooler' for a 17 year-old.

Me and my mates all wanted to look like racers at 17
