Help with 964 Servicing
Discussion
Hi
I've recently taken the plunge and purchased a 1990 Carerra 4 (964). Not only is it due it's 12k service (which I was aware of) it's also using oil at a reasonable rate (which I wasn't)
Great fun though........
Wondered though, if anyone knew a reliable Porsche specialist (prefereably not main dealer) that I could use - I'm based in Falkirk, so it's somewhere in the Glasgow ? Edinburgh area I'm after.
Any help appreciated

How are you driving it?
My 964 and a lot of others that we work on tend to be a bit oil thirsty if using high revs a lot of the time, if they just bimble around town and country and motorway at sensible speed they can use next to nil.
I'd guess it being your new toy your playing quite a bit, but also how much is a reasonable rate?
Also is it using it or dropping it, some 964's not all do drop a bit of oil.

Hi there, If you type porsche.com into your search bar, you will find the list of the main dealers.
I stick to main dealers as they guarentee parts and labour should your new parts fail.
If you are looking for things like an air conditioning unit etc at any time, you may wish to try Ebay and get your dealer to fit the part.
Hope this helps with your question, Chris

Hi
Driving it fairly sensibly. Has a quick blast when I first brought it home, but otherwise am treating it very well.
It's not leaking oil (that I can see - i.e. there's none on the drive - or should I say garage floor now that I've become paranoid and lock it away at night), but has got through 5 litres in two weeks so clealry needs some help.
Thanks for the suggestion regards main dealers - I have one reasonably close in Edinburgh - I'm just wanting to see if any scots have any better ideas as whilst I want to do the 'right thing' I also want to keep the price as keen as possible.
Not to say i won't revert to main dealer, but keen to know if there are any good guys locally who also specialise

Thanks warmfuzzies - I think I am. Read in the handbook to start it then check after about 30 seconds.
Did this and added 3 litres before I saw anything on the dipstick but when I checked again this weekend (with the same process) the stick was dry. But then OK again with another 2 litres
Keep asking the questions though - I'm all ears

Cheers C2look - Just getting the hang of this so wondering how you found that thread ?
No probs. It's one I recalled seeing recently and there is a 'search clicky thingy' at the top of the page. Just type in a keyword or phrase and search all previous threads.
Happy searching!
Mm - Wasn't waiting 15 mins so can have a go at that in a week or so.
Might be totally unconnected, but the two times I've found the oil to be low, my check has been prompted by the gears being difficult to engage when stationary. Only happend twice, both times the oil was low and once topped up then absolutely no issue fine again for over a week now

Hi.
If youre in Falkirk, Peter at Motortune in Shotts is your man.
Is the oil gauge (in neutral, on the level)agreeing with the dipstick?
Do you have the undertray on?..that can catch alot of dripped oil.
Are you checking it with the thermostat open - takes 5 to 10 minutes driving from cold.
I use a litre in maybe 2k miles in an original 100k engine. I drive it hard most of the time.
If youre using 3 litres in 2 weeks you may be needing more than a service - some oil use is normal- up to 1 litre in 750 miles - although these motors aren't typically big oil guzzling smokers in their old age afaik.

Great - Nice that I've found someone with first hand experience.
You might be right about it needing more than a service - Just want to be able to take it to someone trustworthy.
Is it the kind of place that will do some checks and give a prognosis or do I go in with my chequebook open and bend over (if you know what I mean.....)
Am working out how to explain myself to the wife !!! Imagine getting her to agree to the ££ for the car and then maybe picking up a good size bill to boot ?
Any thoughts on the 12k service cost (ish).
I guess anything worse, will depend on the issues (albeit it drives really well, great nick etc.)

Peter is one of the good guys. Porsche trained from the 964 era, conscienscious, happy to advise, happy to source cheap parts at cost, £35 an hour last time I checked ..what can I say?!
For self help, Adrian Streather's 964 'enthusiasts companion' (Bentley publishers) is worth a bash. The 964 forum at www.rennlist.org is full of helpful and understanding people, and is def worth a look too.
