Faszination - The Essence Of The 911
Discussion
Sipping a lemon tea and a perfectly distilled glass of guava juice with Greg of E240 fame yesterday, I rather foolishly expressed the notion that there may be life beyond the 911.
Lacking the 'sense of occassion' you get with a Ferrari, not to mention the delicate, tactile nature of that breed's controls; or maybe missing the absolute renegade GT racer savagery of an Ultima...
Then after watching Clarkson on QT, I remembered a certain video...
Much lauded in the pages of EVO magazine, I watched Stefan Whatsisface (he of soft loafer and white sock), proceed to ANNHIALTE the Nordschleife.
Many of you will have seen this seminal demo of the 911's staggering potential (assuming a reasonably psychotic, God-like wheelman) - if not, just get it, now.
If you have even the faintest whiff of 2 star petroleum, secreting as a sweat dropulet from the darkest recess of your being, this is quite possibly the most invigorating dispkay of powersliding and corrective uber oversteer I have ever witnessed. It makes 'In Car 956' seem quite tame - and I can't belive that!
This has to be the holy grail of 911 owning aspirational track based lustmeistery.
My aim in life is to be 1% as good as this guy.
OH-MY-GOD!!!

Any recommendations?
You can get Facszination from Ruf in the UK or Germany, and I think some motorsport specialist do the video now mail order. Do a google search.
It's called 'Fasczination auf dem Nurburgring' in its full title, IIRC. I got mine sent over from Germany about 6 years ago!!
IMHO, the In Car 956 footage of the Nurburgring is much, much scarier to watch. Roser gets the tail out more in the Ruf video, but he is driving at much lower speeds than Dezza Bell in the 956.
I have driven the 'ring, and seeing Dezza's in-car footage scared me witless. Stefan is quick, but Derek has no margin for error at the speeds he is doing, and there is so little run-off... brave man is Del. Bigger balls than Roser, and that's saying something!
I've got two avi's or mpegs or something of the run round the nordschleife in the yellowbird.
One is all in car, the other is some in car with some helicopter footage.
After watching it i could see how he went through a set of tyres in one lap!!!
If anyone wants to host these two downloads somewhere then let me know and i will ftp them on to you. I think they're about 100Mb.

DeR, you may have expressed the notion that there is life after 911 (no, not THAT 9/11), but suffice to say folks, he was swiftly slapped down ! A bit of a verbal half-nelson later and our man was beaten into submission, much to the amusement of all the Mancs in the pub at the time (whom our man very quickly disassociated himself with).
T'was a magical experience, and thank you Der, for taking time out of your mythical existence for nearly two hours of superb banter - our dear brother is a top bloke, I'm pleased to report
We arrived at the watering hole and spent the first part in a kind of intellectual "Alas Smith and Jones" head to head, and the world seemed a better place, having found a sympathiser to my cause. Atilla the Hun anyone ?
We then partook of another snifter and changed spaces; this time casual bar chairs, and good old fashioned car banter. Recounts of chomping on cigars in front of one of the finest car radiator grilles and supping Scotch (dunno if I mentioned that, DeR, but dear old pater has a bottle of Scotlands finest malt in the garage for such religious experiences), bending cars round lamp posts, speed, engines, interiors....quite wonderful stuff.
But alas, all too quickly the time to depart arrived. Fat chewed. Good company. Camarades et amities. And final respect due to Lexus Man - whilst I gave the Taxi a damn good spanking down Motorway6, our man was back driving the desk
You're a great guy Simon, and it was a pleasure meeting you and discussing cars.
For those that asked (I believe Buzz Lightyear was alluded to), our man looks a little like Ben Oliver from Autocar, but without the poncey beard
mind you, I'm told I look like Ray Winstone (Pool balls in socks not included)

I second the fact that DeR is a top bloke and looks a bit like Ben Elton (that was what you wrote, eh?)
O/T Manu - I have been dead busy sorting job and house move out. Have heard some of your news through ninja. Will defo meet up sometime soon (Secrets or White Horse? Guy will join us I'm sure

Can I put your name down for a trip to the Ring this year then DeR. With a bit of practice you may get to >1% of Stefan Roser's driving ability. You know you want too, just don't tell Mrs DeR.

This one's also a pretty fast video of the Ring...

It's really amusing to see the Ringtaxi in action, some friends of mine were in it a few months ago and have not been the same since...

I've got the Faszination video, although it seems to be out on loan more than I have it sometimes! For any Parker Knoll pilots I can also recommend Tony Ponds 100 mph average speed lap of the IoM TT circuit in a Rover 827 Vitesse!.He may not be Mr Charisma but when he does 140 through a 30 limit and hits the rev limiter when it gets airborne you have to give him respect! It's available from Duke video for around 12 quid.
