oily patch near base of passenger windscreen

I've just come back from a quick trip out and noticed an oily patch on the battery tray cover up by the passenger side windscreen. Further investigation reveals that the hex sockets in the rocker box cover bolts are also full of fresh oil, but at the front of the engine only. Something's breathing heavily, but where's the oil coming from? The crankcase breather goes into the driver's side airbox, not the passenger side. Can there really be that much oil vapour floating around the engine bay? There's a bit of oil under the driver's side airbox, but that seems to be older oil.

As a complete aside, I once drove the 50 miles to Silverstone from my house at speeds over 69mph
across country & Motorway. When I arrived at Silverstone I noticed a fair amount of oil sprayed on the passenger side of the windscreen, investigation led me to find that I had left the filler cap off the previous day when topping up the oil 
I checked the oil levels and I had lost very little, certainly still above 90% left in!
The best bit is, even after an enthusiastic drive, the filler cap was still where I left it the previous day nestling on top of the engine.
